This vegetarian, Nyonya-style mango salad is a perfect choice for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Minimalist and easy to prepare, it’s a refreshing addition to any meal.

Malaysian Indian woman tourist happily posing with the two kids naked stone sculptures in Frogner Park Norway
Akershus Fortress: A Glimpse into Oslo’s Pas
Our first stop (COPENHAGEN: KRONBORG CASTLE) was Akershus Fortress, a historical gem dating back to 1290, originally constructed to defend Oslo from invasions. This impressive stone structure has served various roles over the centuries, including a royal residence and a military base. Walking through the grounds, we admired the views over the harbor and Oslofjord, along with the beautiful rose garden. Though we couldn’t enter the Armed Forces Museum, it’s a must-visit for military history enthusiasts. Akershus offers a unique mix of history, beauty, and tranquility - a perfect way to start our day (PERTH, AUSTRALIA: ATTRACTIONS & DINING).

Depending on personal preference, you can incorporate ingredients such as potatoes and green peas for added texture and taste. The process of making keema is straightforward and accessible, making it an ideal choice for a satisfying meal (EASY MUTTON CURRY). Additionally, I will share creative ways to repurpose any leftover keema into lighter dishes for future enjoyment.

Frederiksborg Castle

Our adventure began with Frederiksborg Castle, also known as Frederiksborg Slot. Situated on three small islands surrounded by a tranquil lake, this Renaissance marvel stands as the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. Things To Do in Krabi and Phuket

Malaysian Indian lady tourist holding the hands of a small monkey during the Monkey Show in Krabi, Thailand
Humans are funny creatures indeed. Despite the increasing number of women traveling solo for various reasons (BANGKOK SOLO TRIP) like business, work-related trips, or simply holidays, people still seem puzzled and ask the same old question - why am I traveling alone (? When this question comes from Asians, I can understand their curiosity, as it might be uncommon to see an Indian woman of my age, in my late 50s, traveling solo (HANOI CULTURE).

However, it's quite alarming when I receive the same inquiry from Westerners, especially considering the thousands of Western women venturing out alone. What could be behind this universal curiosity about solo female travelers? It's a question that leaves me intrigued. While pondering over this, let me share my solo adventure, a short and sassy trip to Krabi and Phuket, which are considered paradises for Westerners (PRETORIA MOMENTS & CAPE TOWN STEALER).

Mee Goreng. Ah, yes! It’s an integral part of our Malaysian food culture. From street stalls to coffee shops, cafes, and even high-end restaurants, you can always find Mee Goreng on the menu when Malaysian cuisine is featured. Personally, I love those served at coffee shops. They’re so tasty, and every bite evokes nostalgia - a classic that delights the senses (ASAM LAKSA FACES: NYONYA & INSTANT).

I have three delicious recipes for you to choose from: Mee Goreng Malay Style with Prawns (MALAY STYLE PRAWN NOODLES), Easy Malaysian Fried Mee, and Authentic Street Stall Style Seafood Fried Mee.

What To Do In Pulau Ketam

Woman posing on a stand still bicycle, at a ferry jetty, with ferries waiting in the waters
After our tea break (PULAU KETAM TIMELESS CHARM), we were eager to discover more of Pulau Ketam. As we strolled, we noticed the police station and faintly saw the schools. In this village, people mainly get around by cycling, with occasional motorbikes on the narrow lanes, which serve as the main roads.

Our walk took us to the other side of the village, where we visited three temples. The first temple was slightly further from the jetty, and the second was officiated by the late Tan Sri Manickavasagam. While at the third temple, we chose to skip seeing the snake in the cage. We also couldn't overlook the captivating murals adorning the walls. Naturally, we couldn't resist snapping photos to immortalize our visit (MALACCA RIVER CRUISE, AYUTTHAYA CRUISE & JEJU ISLAND).

Can you still recall my recipe for PORTUGUESE VEGETABLE PICKLE? You might be wondering why I’m bringing it up. Pada Salted Fish Pickle is truly delicious, especially if you love salted fish and the spicy kick from green chilies like I do.

Now, before we get to the recipe, here’s what you should know:

Pulau Ketam - An Overnight Trip

Pulau Ketam, or Crab Island, is a name that carries an air of charm. This island, nestled at the mouth of the Klang River near Port Klang, just downstream from Kuala Lumpur, has enchanted others, while it remained mysterious to me. Friends and fellow travelers rave about it, insisting it's a place you simply must experience. They talk about it with such fondness, always eager to return. My curiosity was piqued. Getting my husband to join in, we invited another husband-and-wife team, much older, to join us. They too were ready to discover what was in store in Pulau Ketam (KOTA KINABALU WATERFRONT, KUANTAN COASTAL WONDERS & LAKE COMO).

Bread Flower/Kesidang Plant: An Enchanting Beauty for the Senses

Nature is truly captivating. It fills our lives with joy and peace. But nature also needs our help. As climate change makes the weather hotter and more unpredictable, we depend more on air conditioners, even for our babies. Yet, people miss the benefits of urban gardening. It can cool our homes and naturally relieve stress (Bay Leaves Healing Therapy). Urban gardening helps the environment and fills the air with the soothing scent of flowers, offering a peaceful escape from the stress that harms us.

Enter Ms. Nava, the founder of Nava's Zen, a true enthusiast of urban gardening. Today, she introduces us to the enchanting bread flower, also known as Kesidang, Kerak Nasi, Tikar Seladang, or Vallaris Glabra (Ylang Ylang). These white, star-shaped blossoms have a scent that evokes pandan leaves or the aroma of cooked fragrant jasmine rice. Whenever they bloom, Ms. Nava takes a moment to stand in Nava's Zen and inhale their delightful fragrance. It's her natural way to calm her senses and enjoy a bit of tranquility (Rangoon Creeper).

Buns & Noodles (Bukit Rimau): Niche Excellence

Saying goodbye to loyal clients who have been strong supporters of our brand, especially when they're leaving due to moving away, brings mixed feelings. It's important to show gratitude for their support, even though it's tough to see them go. In business, clients come and go, so it's crucial to stay focused on our passion rather than getting too emotional. As a gesture of appreciation, I recently organized a heartfelt farewell for departing clients, recognizing their contributions to our business. And what better way for us Malaysians to bond than over a meal together?

As a culinary enthusiast, I'm always on the lookout for new dining experiences. This time, I decided to try out Buns & Noodles in Bukit Rimau. Beforehand, I made sure to inform them of my visit, which is important in case they have any limitations or special arrangements, as I mentioned earlier (SAFAA)

Diced fermented soy beans (tempe) cooked with red and green chillies, and soy sauce
Fermented soybeans, known as tempeh or tempe, are a fantastic meat alternative for vegetarians and vegans. Packed with health benefits, tempeh is a staple in local Malay and Indonesian dishes. I'm a huge fan of tempeh and use it all the time in my cooking, especially because I love Malay and Indonesian food. You’ll often find me at Malay stalls, loading up on their delicious offerings. During my time in Indonesia, I indulged in plenty of tempeh and was particularly fond of sambal terasi and sambal ijo.

Bluie pea herbs scented Malaysian rice, served with condiments like half boiled salted egg, spicy fish and others, served on banana leaf
What makes this Nasi Kerabu Kelantan so special? Well, all the herbs used in it, which give it that distinctive Kelantanese flavor, are grown by Ms. Nava herself. And here's the kicker - they're all organic. So, this dish isn't just tasty, it's a testament to Nava's passion to her urban garden. .

Besides the flavorful rice, the condiments served with this Malaysian dish are truly exceptional. If you're expecting the same old Nasi Kerabu Kelantan you've had before, you might be disappointed (BUNGA KANTAN/GINGER TORCH RAW SALAD).

Resepi Sambal Tumis Ikan Bilis Petai

Petai (stink beans) cooked in a spicy mix, with fried anchovies and boiled eggs
(Updated Version)

Petai, or stink beans, has long been a superfood in Malaysia (MEE REBUS VEGETARIAN) and other Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Singapore. I’m one of those who absolutely love petai and can never get enough of it! Over the years, petai prices have shot up, as even those who once disliked it are now embracing it for its many health benefits. The easiest and most-loved way to cook petai is with ikan bilis, or anchovies - a dish I’ve made countless times. Oh-yum! Just writing about it now makes my mouth water.

Siem Reap, Cambodia: Wat Thamey/The Killing Fields

An enclosed memorial with a glass case at the center displaying bones and skulls of victims from Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge era
Siem Reap, a city known for its breathtaking temples and vibrant culture (AYUTTHAYA: ANCIENT CITY OF THAILAND), holds a deeper, more somber history. Beyond the grandeur of Angkor Wat (ANGKOR WAT: A TRAVEL GUIDE) lies Wat Thmey, a Buddhist pagoda that serves as a poignant reminder of Cambodia’s tragic past under the Khmer Rouge regime. Known as the "Killing Fields Pagoda," Wat Thmey stands as a memorial to the victims of the brutal Khmer Rouge era from 1975 to 1979.

Wat Thmey

Wat Thmey’s stupa houses the skeletal remains of thousands who perished during Pol Pot’s genocidal rule, which led to the loss of nearly 1.7 million lives. The bones and skulls on display inside the pagoda’s glass-encased structure serve as chilling symbols of the atrocities committed during that time. This memorial is not only a testament to the pain endured but also to the resilience of the Cambodian people who survived the darkest chapter in their nation’s history.

Malaysian Sodhi (Indian Coconut Milk Stew)

Stew made with coconut milk, turmeric powder, tomato, curry leaves, fenugreek seeds, lime juice and salt.
(Updated Version)

Simplicity shines in Sodhi, the Indian coconut milk stew. This much-loved dish also finds a cherished place in cuisines from other parts of the world, like Sri Lanka and especially Kerala. Making Sodhi is effortless: just add all the ingredients to a pot, simmer, season with lime juice and salt, and you're done.

You can create various types of Sodhi, and to make it a one-pot dish, adding vegetables is a great option. I often do this to keep the dish interesting and avoid monotony. Plus, it saves me the trouble of preparing a separate vegetable dish (EASY VEGETARIAN TOFU RECIPES).

Best Vegetarian Mutton Recipes

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s talk about vegetarian mutton. This isn’t your typical mock or meatless product; it’s made from mushrooms and mushroom stalks. It's a healthier alternative to many mock meats that often contain artificial flavoring and coloring. When purchasing vegetarian mutton, be sure to check the label for ingredients that specify it is made from mushrooms.

I find vegetarian mutton to be a delightful option, although I don't consume it regularly to avoid overindulging. Remember, moderation is key to a healthy diet. In this post, I’ll share five effortless recipes featuring vegetarian mutton, all made from pantry-friendly ingredients.

Pucuk Ubi Masak Lemak (Tapioca leaf In Coconut Gravy)

A bowl of stew, made with coconut milk, fresh turmeric, lemongrass, dried shrimps and tapioca leaves.
(Updated Version)

For an urban gardener like me, growing veggies, herbs, and fruits is incredibly fulfilling. These are for our own consumption. Amongst what I grow are tapioca, sweet potatoes, and recently, I’ve added purple yam. While I haven’t experimented with purple yam leaves yet, tapioca leaves and sweet potato leaves are absolutely wonderful when transformed into a Malay dish (NASI ULAM/HERBED RICE RECIPES) known as Masak Lemak.

Ikan Balado

Close view of an Indonesian style fish dish. Spicy, vibrant and revelation of the much loved Asian tastes
(Updated Version)

Ladies and gentlemen, you might be wondering how this Indian Malaysian lady became a small-time shining star in Indonesian cuisine. Well, it all started with my love for local Malay dishes, and along the way, I gradually fell for Indonesian cuisine too. There’s a definite connection between the two, and apart from my trip to Indonesia (YOGYAKARTA TEMPLES & SURAKARTA HEARTBEAT) that deepened my love for their food, I had been cooking Indonesian dishes long before.

I also picked up cooking tips from Indonesians in Malaysia. When Nava’s Zen was under renovation, I learned even more about Indonesian cooking from the team working on it. The rest, as they say, is history.

Now, onto Ikan Balado and Ikan Balado Hijau/Ijo - the main difference lies in whether you use red chilies or green chilies (Cabe Hijau/Ijo). Indonesians also use jeruk limau (pickled lime), something my late mum used to make as well, similar to the Indian Salted Lime Pickle. Personally, I don’t think it’s a must for Indonesian savory dishes, as you can easily substitute with lime juice (KENTANG INDONESIA & TEMPE OREK).

Kuih Sagu Kukus (Steamed Sago Cake)

Recall our discussion on sago in "EFFORDLESS MALAY DESSERTS"? Let's delve into it again, this time focusing on Kuih Kukus Sago/Steamed Sago Cakes. Despite their delightful flavor, they consistently turned out too sticky. Even after coating them with fresh grated coconut, they clung to fingers, prompting me to serve them in a saucer with a fork, which is actually how the cakes should be served, to prevent spillage and mess on the floor. Baffled by their stickiness, I experimented with various methods: steaming, cooking with water until thick, and chilling. Yet, none resolved the issue.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Travel Guide

Indian Malaysian lady tourist posing on the war tankers in the compound of Reunification Palace
Ben Thanh Market
A visit to Ben Thanh Market is a must for first-time travelers (BANGKOK THAILAND: THINGS TO DO). I walked there from my hotel, about a half-hour walk, and along the way, the streets were already filled with vendors, traders on motorbikes, and shops lining both sides. Even before you get to the market, there are plenty of opportunities to shop. The market itself is bustling with stalls offering all sorts of goods—clothes, shoes, bags, handcrafted souvenirs, and local delicacies.

I picked up two traditional Vietnamese slippers, and it’s all about your bargaining skills. Though I was tempted to try some local food, I hesitated, having just arrived and still figuring out the currency, which didn’t sit well with the traders. I left feeling like I had explored Ben Thanh Market on my own terms.

If you ask me, I’m all for sour flavors, and kerabu mangga is the epitome of tangy delight. I’ve sampled various styles, from Thai to different Malay versions, and let me tell you, each one has its charm.

Mochakottai Karuvadu Kulumbu (Field Beans Salted Fish Curry)

(Updated Version)

Every beloved and timeless dish, salted fish curry is something I’ve made countless times. Each time, there’s a twist that brings a new variation. While the core ingredients remain the same, the types of beans can vary - from mochakottai (field beans), chickpeas, or kondakadalai (chana dal). Additional ingredients like potatoes, brinjals, white radish, okra, or murungakkai (moringa fruits/sticks) offer endless possibilities (SOUTH INDIAN FISH CURRY RECIPES).

Rangoon Creeper: Cultivating Zen Blooming Bliss

Rangoon Creeper covering a pergola with vibrant red flowers in clusters." (119 characters
(Updated Version)

Rangoon Creeper, or Combretum Indicum, is also known as Drunken Sailor, Akar Dani, Chinese Honeysuckle, and Red Jasmine. This charming plant originates from Southeast Asia, particularly Myanmar. Its name pays tribute to Rangoon, now known as Yangon. In Nava's Zen garden, it brings both beauty and fragrance (ROSELLE - BENEFITS & USES).

Fragrance and Blooms

Rangoon Creeper isn’t just about its appearance; its scent is truly captivating. The sweet, fruity aroma fills the air, creating a serene and relaxing ambiance. The flowers begin as delicate white buds and gradually transition into clusters of rich red blooms. Over time, the slender stems grow into strong, lush vines, perfect for adorning pergolas or trellises.

Siamese Laksa Lemak

A bowl of thick, spicy, creamy and aromatic laksa, garnished with slices of pineapple, cucumber, red chilies and Thai basil leaves

(Updated Version)

I’ve traveled all over Thailand, from Hyathai to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, over the span of 10 years. It’s been an amazing journey of discovery. Along the way, I indulged in Thai cuisine, picking up cooking tips from every dish I tasted and experienced. My love for Thai food runs deep (THAI GREEN EGG CURRY) - so much so that I had already started cooking Thai dishes long before I set foot in the country.

Of course, there were a few hits and misses. Take the Siamese Laksa I had at a small Muslim Thai roadside eatery in Chiang Mai - not the best, to be honest. But hey, that’s part of traveling and tasting all kinds of food, right? It’s about discovering for yourself. And if the food doesn’t meet your expectations, it’s all part of the learning curve. No need to complain, sulk, or belittle the experience - because you can't always expect the best (CHIANG MAI & CHIANG RAI: AN ENRICHING TOUR).

Mee Rebus (Vegetarian)

A swallow white plate consisting of thick vegetarian spicy sauce, with blanched yellow noodles, and crispy fritters, garnished with green chillies
(Updated Version)

Mee rebus is a well-loved noodle dish originating from Malaysia and Singapore. Its name, derived from Malay, translates to "boiled noodles." This dish consists of yellow noodles drenched in a flavorful gravy that strikes a delicate balance between sweetness and spice. The gravy is crafted from a blend of ingredients such as sweet potatoes, shrimp paste, dried shrimp, and a medley of spices.

Common toppings include hard-boiled egg, fried tofu, green onions, bean sprouts, and occasionally crispy shallots. I've had the pleasure of trying various renditions of mee rebus, both from restaurants and street vendors. Interestingly, some of the most satisfying versions I've encountered have been from street vendors, often at a more affordable price.
