Now, if you're under the impression that making Asam Pedas is complicated, think again. It’s actually quite simple, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise. It all starts with gathering the herbs and pantry-friendly ingredients to make the Asam Pedas rempah. You can make it from scratch or opt for store-bought versions. Zen Mango Pickles: Three Unique Recipes to Savor

(Updated Version)
Aam ka Achaar, or mango pickle, isn't just a beloved staple in India and Pakistan; it's a sensation across South Asia. Even Western pals have caught on and are nailing it with their own versions of mango pickle. Oh, before I digress further, let me tell you - mango pickles in India (CHANDIGARH UBRAN MARVELare so incredibly salty! I can’t fathom why. They even pack them like butter, in those small plastic compartments, and they’re so salty I couldn’t even manage a tiny dip (NEW DELHI REVELATION).

Tanni Saar (Sweet Leaf In Dhal Gravy)

Sweet leaves cooked with lentils and spices, served in an Indian silver bowl
(Updated Version)

Tanni Saar - now that’s a name that might raise an eyebrow or two! Directly translated, tanni means water and saar means juice. Oh dear! I’m not going to dwell on that translation, but let me tell you what Tanni Saar actually is. It's a delightful concoction of dal and sweet leaves, specifically known as tausi murungai keerai in Tamil. Think of it as a hybrid between dal curry, stew, and soup, with light coconut milk and your everyday kitchen staples rounding it out.

Hokkien Hae Mee, Penang Hae Mee, Prawn Mee & Mee Yoke Recipes

Hokkien Hae Mee – traditional Hokkien noodle dish with prawns, egg and seafood broth
(Updated Version)
Hokkien Hae Mee, or Hokkien Prawn Mee, is a prawn noodle dish that revolves around its star ingredient - the prawn stock. This rich, savory essence forms the heart of this beloved Malaysian Chinese classic (HAND CRAFTED FISH BALL NOODLE SOUP). While the photos of Hae Mee dishes might look intricate and intimidating, don’t be discouraged. With the right ingredients and a bit of kitchen confidence, you can easily recreate this dish at home.

In today’s world, capturing that perfect Hae Mee shot is more about smartphone skills than anything else. It’s all in how you style the dish, choose your props, and present the meal. But don’t get too caught up in the visual showmanship. The truth is, anyone can master this flavorful prawn noodle dish, and that includes you.

Tamatar ki Chutney, Takkali Thokku & Tomato Rice

Luscious, juicy washed tomatoes, ready to be used in cooking
(Updated Version)

Tamatar ki Chutney is a tomato-based chutney, known in the Punjabi language as "Tamatar ki Chutney," and is a dish from the North Indian region (INDIAN DESSERTS TO SAVOR). Tomatoes are a staple in many curries (CHANDIGARH NORTH INDIA MARVELS), and when used to make chutney, they create a spicy, tangy, and aromatic thick gravy. This chutney pairs well with chapati, paratha, dosai, and even idli. However, I recently paired it with our side dishes for a rice meal instead (VEGETARIAN MUTTON GASTRONOMY).

There’s also Takkali Thokku, which I consider another version of tomato chutney. Though it shares similarities with Tamatar ki Chutney, it differs slightly in its ingredients. The recipe I’m sharing is my own version. Plus, I’ll also show you how to make tomato rice. You have choices when it comes to cooking with tomatoes, don’t you? Isn’t it wonderful that Ms. Nava offers you these choices?

Classic Genoise: A European-Style Sponge Cake

(Updated Version)

To tell you the truth, the ingredients for a classic Genoise are minimalistic (EASY CLASSIC BUTTER CAKE). However, it’s the technique that ensures the cake turns out as expected - soft, airy, and crumbly, melting in your mouth with every bite. Before sharing the recipe, here are the key techniques you should be aware of in baking a perfect Classic Genoise (EASIEST BANANA CHOCOLATE CAKE).

Whisk Eggs and Sugar:

Use a double boiler (with water boiling in the bottom pan).

Whisk the eggs and sugar in a bowl placed over the boiling water.

Continue whisking until the mixture is slightly warm and foamy.

Sunny Lamb Traditional Apam Balik: A Street Food Delight

While out buying groceries, I stumbled upon Sunny Lamb Traditional Apam Balik. Intrigued, I approached the van stall to explore this concept further. The menu offered a captivating array of apam balik varieties and these are vegan friendly. After considering my options, I chose the ori kelapa parut (original coconut) and jagung cheese/corn cheese. The other varieties were equally tempting, but I decided that three pieces of these Malaysian (EFFORTLESS MALAY DESSERTS) traditional pancakes would be enough to start with. Perhaps next time, I will try the other varieties.

Chinese Ginseng Chicken Soup Recipe

A small bowl of soup with ginseng herbs, kei chi, dried longan, garlic, ginger, chicken, and a garnish of spring onions.
(Updated Version)

Roots, barks, herbs, and chicken - these are the essential ingredients for Chinese Ginseng Chicken Soup. I particularly enjoy homemade, healthy, and nutritious Chinese soups. Making any soup, including Chinese Ginseng Chicken Soup, is straightforward. If anyone claims they can’t make this soup, I’d be surprised (SIMPLE AND HEARTY LAMB SOUP)! It's as simple as adding all the ingredients - roots, barks, and medicinal herbs from a Chinese medical hall or provision shop - into a slow cooker or simmering them on very low heat over the stove.

Pulut Inti: Glutinous Rice with Sweet Coconut

Steamed glutinous rice with palm sugar sweet coconut atop
(Updated Version)

When it comes to cooking, do you really need every ingredient listed in a recipe? Not necessarily. If you’re the type who follows recipes to the letter, you might feel compelled to gather every single ingredient. But if you’re like Ms. Nava, you’ll consider what you already have and adapt the recipe accordingly (MALAY DESSERTS MADE SIMPLE).

Making do with what you have often involves a bit of creative thinking and improvisation. Take, for example, making pulut inti. Traditionally, it requires banana leaves, but if you’re missing them, why not adapt? I did just that using my Pyrex dish to craft a delicious serving of Pulut Inti. See? You don’t need everything to be perfect to be a food hero (KUIH SAGO KUKUS).

Resepi Sambal Telur: Egg Sambal

4 boiled eggs in a spicy egg sambal
(Updated Version)

Always a classic and a favorite in my kitchen - Sambal Telur, or Egg Sambal. No matter how many times I prepare it, it never gets old. This version, however, stands out for its unique twist: the addition of dried shrimps. Have you tried making or tasting a sambal telur like this? The dried shrimps truly elevate the traditional egg sambal, adding depth and taking it to the next level of flavor (SIMPLE AND EASY EGG RECIPES).

Plus, nothing beats fresh turmeric for the vibrant yellow hue, contrasting beautifully with the red, vibrant shade of sambal. Fresh turmeric also infuses a delightful, fresh scent. Basil leaves can be replaced with other herbs of your choice to suit your taste (RESEPI SAMBAL TUMIS BILIS PETAI).

FIsh Ball Noodle Soup: Handcrafted Fish Balls & Homemade Broth

A bowl of homemade fish balls and noodles with a spicy dip
(Updated Version)

Forget store-bought fish balls! I ventured into making homemade Fish Ball Noodle Soup from scratch, and it was absolutely worth it. These hand-rolled fish balls, simmered in a rich broth made from fish bones and skin, were bouncy, soft, and completely odor-free.

Nescafe Chocolate Cake (Eggless): Simplicity Wins

Medium size baked eggless chocolate coffee cake. Baked a loaf and some sliced into squares and long pieces, dusted with icing sugar
(Updated Version)

Nescafe Chocolate Cake? I mean, why bother buying more coffee (EGGLESS MILO CAKE) when I’ve got Nescafe right here? So, here’s a cake that’s got it all: coffee, cocoa, and no eggs. It’s like a delicious dark knight in cake form - rich, moist, and vanilla-scented (SUJEE CAKE ELEGANCE).

Malu Kirata: Sri Lankan Fish Coconut Milk Curry Redefined

A bowl of fish coconut milk curry, garnished with spring onions
Malu Kirata is a traditional Sri Lankan fish curry, typically made with fish, coconut milk, and a blend of spices. (KIRI HODI: SRI LANKAN EGG COCONUT MILK STEW). While I don’t have the exact recipe, I know it features fish in a coconut milk curry or gravy. Inspired by this dish, I created my own version of Malu Kirata, or Sri Lankan Fish Coconut Milk Curry. It may not be the traditional recipe, but it's definitely worth trying (MEEN PUTTU).

Kiri Hodi: Sri Lankan Coconut Milk Stew with Boiled Eggs

Coconut milk stew made with turmeric powder, boiled eggs, tomatoes, curry leaves green chillies, fenugreek seeds and lime juice.
Kiri Hodi is the Sri Lankan version of coconut milk stew, known in Kerala as Ishtu and in Malaysia as Sodhi. This delightful stew typically features a base of coconut milk, turmeric, fenugreek seeds, onions or shallots, green chilies, tomatoes, curry leaves, lime juice, and salt. From this foundational blend, you can modify or enhance the stew by adding various ingredients like vegetables.

Meen Puttu: A South Indian Classic

Indian flaked fish dish, cooked with turmeric and spices in a bowl
What exactly is meen/fish puttu? For those in the know, it’s a cherished South Indian dish made from shredded fish. Typically using shark, kingfish, or mackerel, the fish is cooked, flaked, and sautéed with fresh coconut, shallots, green or red chilies, ginger, garlic, curry leaves, turmeric, and spices. Fish puttu is usually enjoyed with rice or as part of a larger meal.

If shark isn’t your choice, you can use mackerel or another fish. It’s worth noting that the shark used in meen/fish puttu, often smaller species like "sura meen," is not the same as the large sharks used for shark fin soup. The smaller sharks used here are caught for their meat, ensuring a more sustainable approach.

Milo Cake With Milo Glaze (Eggless)

Baked milk cake with milo glaze, sliced into pieces and placed on paper cups, with the other half of the cake
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I must confess, I’m not exactly a master baker. My baking ventures are rare and usually happen only when I have a bit of time to spare. I bake not to dazzle, but to satisfy my curiosity about whether baking really is as remarkable as some enthusiasts claim. It’s always better to discover things for ourselves rather than relying solely on others’ opinions. So, without any need for proving anything to anyone, let’s see if this Milo Cake with Milo Glaze (Eggless) can stand on its own (SUJEE CAKE & CLASSIC, MARBLE LEMON BUTTER CAKES)

This recipe isn’t originally mine; I stumbled upon it while browsing through instructables. Unlike some of my past baking experiments from the internet that ended in disaster, this one seemed promising. I opted for Milo instead of cocoa powder - mainly because that tin of Milo has been languishing in my pantry for ages, and it felt like the perfect time to put it to good use, especially since we’re more of a coffee-drinking household.

Healthy & Easy Vegetarian Avocado Recipes

Avocado Yogurt Dip in a bowl, served with fresh veggies and crackers
Avocados are common these days that even my local hypermarket has them, and at just RM5.00 each, they’re a real bargain! I used to be so obsessed that I’d buy six at a time and eat them raw until I needed a change. So, I started experimenting and came up with some exciting new ways to enjoy avocados. Enter the Avocado Yogurt Dip - perfect with crackers, raw veggies, and a fantastic addition to salads (TASTY VEGETARIAN MUTTON RECIPES).

They say an avocado a day keeps the bland meals away! Packed with healthy fats, fiber, vitamins like E and K, and minerals like potassium and magnesium, avocados are a great addition to any diet. But since they’re calorie-dense, moderation is key. As Ms. Nava always says, “Everything in moderation - never overdoing it to avoid health consequences.”

Easy Classic Butter Cake

Baking an easy classic butter cake is truly fulfilling for me - how about you? There’s something heavenly about its rich, buttery flavor and tender, vanilla-infused crumb. This cake is perfect for any occasion, offering a comforting delight that brings warmth to every meal (EASIEST BANANA CHOCOLATE CAKE). What I love most about this classic butter cake is its simplicity; it shines without the need for heavy toppings.

The best part? You can’t go wrong with Ms. Nava’s easy classic butter cake (EASY BREAD PUDDING: VEGETARIAN DESSERT). Those who have tried this recipe can’t praise it enough, often mentioning how straightforward and foolproof it is. One enthusiastic baker even shared a photo (see below) to showcase their success with the recipe.

Cantonese Yee Mee: Chinese Style Noodles Simplified

A roll of crispy yee mee roll, in a thick soup with varieties of seafood and fresh veggies
Let's skip the stories and dive straight into Seafood Yee Mee. The key to this dish lies in the stock (TOM YUM SOUP VARIETIES). Once you have a good stock, everything else falls into place. Here’s how you can prepare the essential stocks.

Vegetable Brown Stock

For a vegetarian option, which also works for Seafood Yee Mee, you can make a vegetable brown stock. Sauté carrots, oyster mushrooms, onion and garlic in some butter or oil. Then, add water and let it simmer over low heat to extract the flavors. This creates a rich brown stock.

Mental Health Benefits of Nature

In today’s fast-paced urban life, the focus - or rather, the unspoken truth - is on success, achievements, and fame. The daily grind, consta...
