Located on a corner lot in Kota Kemuning, Shah
Alam, Selangor, Kawan Place offers a choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Green
is their highlight color - seen on the signboard, façade, and dining area - while
the overall ambiance feels clean and welcoming. We arrived on a Monday at about
11:15 a.m.; as we entered the indoor dining area, we noticed a few customers
tucking into their meals at the outside pavement dining area (WHERE TO EAT IN PERAK).

Service was
prompt. A “new items launch promotion” menu and a full menu booklet were placed
on our table. Offerings covered typical kopitiam fare: rice plates, noodles,
fried dishes, side orders, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks.
From the
promotion menu, we ordered
• Cantonese-style Hor Fun Seafood (flat rice noodles with seafood)
• Hainanese Chicken Chop
Both dishes came with complimentary iced lemon tea. My husband requested hot
lemon tea without sugar, which was accommodated.
For takeaway,
we chose the Chicken Slice & Egg Croissant from the main menu.

The iced and
hot lemon teas arrived quickly - refreshing and soothing, with an uplifting
lemon aroma. Ten minutes later, the Cantonese Hor Fun (CANTONESE YEE MEE RECIPE) was served. The portion
was generous, with vegetables, seafood, and noodles in a thick gravy. Flavour
was decent, especially with the chili-soy sauce we requested, though the
shallow plate made the dish prone to spilling.
The Hainanese
Chicken Chop came with coleslaw, crispy fries, grilled tomato, and mixed frozen
vegetables atop what appeared to be grilled chicken. Plating deserves mention:
coleslaw, Hainanese sauce, and chili sauce for the fries were served
separately.
The coleslaw, too, must be highlighted for
its creamy, luscious coating and satisfying crunch. The fries, served hot, were crisply satisfying and - whether dipped in
chili sauce or not - just as enjoyable as those in other eateries.
The grilled tomato, for some reason, was left untouched. Unfortunately, the
Hainanese sauce poured over the chicken before eating was watery and lacked
seasoning, diminishing what should have been the meal’s highlight. Basically,
it was a meal that satisfied our hunger, not one we will yearn for (SPICY FRIED CHICKEN RECIPE).

The Chicken
Slice & Egg Croissant, eaten later for dinner, would have been better
enjoyed fresh; the croissant had lost its crunch by then. Still, curiosity made
it worth a try.

The total bill
was RM 51.85, service charge included. We had no regrets about dining at Kawan
Place, but we are unsure if we will return.
