Chinese Steamed Chicken Recipe

Steamed chicken with ginger, cabbage, and spring onions on a silver oblong serving tray.
By far, the easiest, simplest, and most uncomplicated Chinese steamed chicken recipe. This is a homemade version, not to be compared with restaurant-style steamed chicken. Mine is different - I've added my own twist while keeping it budget-friendly (NO-COOK EASY CHICKEN SALAD).

Steamed food is generally healthier than fried food, and this Chinese steamed chicken is no exception. The minimalist cooking method keeps it light and clean. It’s perfect for a light dinner, and if you’re having an early meal, pair it with a small portion of rice. You can also discard the chicken skin if you prefer a leaner version (CHICKEN RENDANG RECIPE).

When it comes to ingredients, there’s no hard and fast rule -you can add more or less according to your taste. If you're steaming a whole chicken, insert the ginger slices into the cavity for deeper flavor. As for cabbage, it's optional but a great way to turn this into a complete one-pot meal without needing a separate veggie dish. You can also swap it for other suitable vegetables (MALAYSIAN CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP).

Ingredients

3 medium pieces of chicken – washed, rinsed, and patted dry

Some ginger slices

Some sliced cabbage (optional)

Some spring onions – sliced thinly

Few drops of sesame oil

Salt to taste

For the Raw Ginger Sauce/Dip

(Or serve the ginger and chillies separately if you prefer)

Some minced, grated, or finely chopped ginger

Sliced green and red chillies

Dark soy sauce

Combine all ingredients together

Minced ginger, red and green chillies in soy sauce served in a small bowl.
Method

Place the chicken on a steaming tray.

Add ginger slices on top and sprinkle with salt.

Steam until the chicken is soft and tender.

Turn off the heat, remove the lid, and place cabbage on top. Let it soften in the steam for a minute or longer, depending on your preference.

Sprinkle spring onions and sesame oil atop before serving with the ginger-chilli dip.
