Best Things to Do in Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg, also called Joburg, is the largest city in South Africa and an important economic center. Its history is closely connected to gold, following the 1886 gold rush, which earned it the nickname “City of Gold.” The city is also linked to the apartheid era, and its streets and landmarks reflect South Africa’s journey toward democracy and social change.

Most travellers get to Johannesburg from Cape Town by a two-hour direct flight from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). Driving is also possible, taking around 14-6 hours, with potential stops along the way (TOP ATTRACTIONS IN CAPE TOWN).

Today, Johannesburg is a lively city where modern skyscrapers stand next to historic neighborhoods. The city combines urban development with nature spots, and history and culture are still a big part of life in Johannesburg.

Free & Easy Sightseeing at Lion & Safari Park

Located within the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lion & Safari Park is about 40 km (45–50 minutes’ drive) from Johannesburg, in Broederstroom, North West Province. T

Lion Park & Safari Park is a wildlife reserve home to Africa’s iconic animals, roaming across large, naturalistic habitats. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and various antelope species can be seen. The park also features meerkats, African wild dogs, and numerous bird species (KOCHI KERALA THINGS TO DO).

The park is largely free and easy, with paths connecting different areas and spaces for photography. Safety should be observed, noting which animals in fenced areas are tame enough for photos and which are best viewed from a distance without direct interaction.

Photos with Lion Cubs

One of the main attractions at the Lion & Safari Park is taking photos with the lion cubs. The cubs are kept in an enclosed area, with turns to enter before taking photos. Staff are always present to ensure safety and proper conduct. The cubs often nap, so it is best to observe quietly, avoid teasing or disturbing them, and give way to others waiting for their turn.

Lion Park Safari
Guided tours in the Lion & Safari Park are scheduled and conducted in open-sided or open-top vehicles. Self-driving is also an option along designated routes for certain animals, mainly herbivores such as giraffes and zebras. However, predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas can only be viewed on guided safaris. These vehicles are designed for safe observation and photography, allowing close and secure viewing of the animals.

White Lions in Lion & Safari Park

One of the highlights during the guided tour is seeing the white lions. Special and unique African lions with pale coats caused by a recessive gene. They gained worldwide recognition after appearing in the 2018 movie Mia and the White Lion. The white lions roam freely or rest in large, natural enclosures and can be seen up close from the vehicle. Silence is advised so as not to disturb them.

Vervet Monkeys in Sun City
Vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) are commonly seen throughout Sun City, particularly around hotels and resorts. They appear in gardens and trees, sometimes within leaping distance of balconies. These small, grey-green monkeys with black faces are agile and curious, and may approach balconies or rooms in search of food. While generally not aggressive, doors and windows should be kept closed and food secured. Observing them from behind closed doors or windows is the safest way to watch their activity.

Pilanesberg National Park Safari

Heading to Pilanesberg National Park from Sun City is super easy, as it is just a few minutes’ drive away. The best way to experience the park is by taking a jeep safari. Open-air jeeps usually arrive at a convenient location in Sun City, often at the hotel entrance, for the safari adventure into the park. The drive covers approximately 572 square kilometers within the remnants of an ancient volcanic crater and is guided by experienced drivers.

Getting into the jeep is already an adventure, and it continues with wildlife sightings during the drive. The park’s unique landscape, with a mix of open plains and wooded areas, supports a diverse range of animals. The Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros—can be spotted, as well as cheetahs, African wild dogs, hippos, and numerous antelope species. Over 300 bird species can also be seen, making it a highlight for birdwatchers.

Beyond the wildlife, Pilanesberg National Park is also about its volcanic terrain and diverse vegetation. Grassy plains are dotted with ridges, hills, and seasonal waterholes, creating dramatic scenery that adds to the safari experience.
