Ming Kee Bak Kut Teh - PJ Old Town

This day will go down as another unforgettable day in my life. It will forever be one of the days I can’t forget for the rest of my life. As it is, I am still coming to terms with dad slipping off within minutes to heaven almost two years ago (more at Nasi Minyak), on this day, when I received a call from my bestie’s family, I felt as though my worst fear is gonna come true. Remember, my 30 over years different race and religion friendship I already told you at Kepong Heng Bak Kut Teh & Restoran Meng Kee Klang Road? Tragic! Utterly shattering day. My heart pumped so fast upon hearing that my bestie had earlier collapsed at the medical center and is now in critical care unit. Still, instead of breaking down and crying, honestly everyone, I put up a brave front. I told her sista I will there soonest possible.

Poondu Thakkali Rasam/Garlic Tomato Rasam

Rasam (Pineapple RasamPepper Garlic Rasam). I can talk and talk about rasam till the cows come home. Believe me because, like I have coughed out many a times, rasam is our favourite (Rasam - Home Made Rasam Powder). In fact, at least twice a week and these days, instead of making twice, I make once a week and store in the fridge. Why not? Who told you, you can't store rasam in the fridge for a few days? After all, rasam is meatless (Nandu Rasam) and its all about spices and the rest of the customary ingredients? Also, how different can a rasam be? Unless of course, you want to take rasam to sky level by coining the various types. Not me though. Enough (Mor Rasam, Egg Rasam & Instant Rasam). Enough of even taking my cooking to a higher level and rasam which is in my fridge, oh, I actually freeze in smaller portions, is then brought out for warming up for our next meal. Thereafter, I just do the topping. Topping like frying fish or making a stir fry veggie, and our meal is ready. Poondu Thakkali Rasam/Garlic Tomato Rasam. I suppose the nearest door to another version. Of course, we don't compromise on its quintessential tastes. Sourness, and tadbit of heat, and rasam definitely is our healthy, nutritious and nourishing to our body Indian soup.

Pineapple Rasam

Rasam and more and more and more? Yes please. I think I have already told you about our undivided love for rasam? Not once though. In fact, countless times and each time I share a rasam recipe (Pepper Garlic Rasam, Rasam, Mor Rasam, Egg Rasam, Nandu Rasam & Instant Rasam). Enough said right? I think so. I know so. And so, let's just stick to the guns of making this latest rasam. Pineapple Rasam? How? Honestly, nothing out of this world or you must kneel on the ground for saying a prayer. Of course not. Pretty much like every other rasam and  we still the customary ingredients. The only difference is pineapple and me using canned pineapple. Otherwise, its a clean sweep in making and for my version, I blended the ingredients for rasam paste. Oh, I did also tip in some gingerly oil for a change. Pineapple Rasam? Truly yours and mine.

Mee Siam Kuah/Gravy (Vegetarian)

Anything is possible these days. Of course. I'm not in denial by the way that anything can be a matter even for food intake. In fact, considering that many are jumping into the back wagon of being a vegetarian, only god knows why, Indians on the whole we shouldn't speak about, there are many possibilities to a vegetarian meal these days. What about me, are you asking? Neh! Never have I thought of being a full blown vegetarian (Maggi Goreng Mamak & Mee Rebus Vegetarian). Of course every now and then, in fact every once a week, I am in the making. The making of a vegetarian meal (Chinese Vegetarian Noodle Soup & Mee Rojak Vegetarian) for my other half-half, and me, I can basically go with the flow. Out came this Mee Siam Kuah/Gravy Vegetarian on this particular Saturday from my kitchen and to our dining table. Mee Siam? I have already spoken about before (Nyonya Mee Siam, Singapore Mee Siam & Mee Siam)? I did. Mee Siam Vegetarian? Nothing is short coming or going. Still a delightful and really slurpy delicious, complete wholesome meal. Oh, for those of you who are anti-egg vegetarian, ditch egg aside and Mee Siam I think must have originated from Thailand? I don't know. You tell me please (Thapthim Krop, Tom Yum Noodle Soup & Siamese Laksa Lemak).

Tom Yum Noodle Soup

So, its back to Tom Yum again? Obviously. Though we did actually have a break from tom yum for like three months and then out came this latest version. But rather a different food calling actually due to its noodles in tom yum soup and which by far I have not made before. Perhaps the closest is Tom Yam Fried Mee Hoon or maybe I should also include Siamese Laksa Lemak. Nevertheless, what can be outstanding or unique for tom yum (Vegan Tom Yum Soup, Tom Yum Goong, Tom Kha Gai & Seafood Tom Yum Soup)? The pride and pleasure must be the various types of herbs, primarily kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass, and let's not never forget about chillies, plus I love fish sauce into tom yam or Thai dishes on the whole. Tom Yum Noodle Soup as you have already noted is not far behind in terms of some of the ingredients and it is also a tremendously sumptuous, fulfilling and power lashing noodle dish (Thai Tomato Soup, Shrimp Pad Thai Salad, Thai Fish Noodle Soup, Tom Yum Fried RiceSpicy Thai Noodles).

Pepper Garlic Rasam

Tell me please then. Wouldn't all of you Indians agree rasam is forever loved? If you want confirmation and affirmation from me, of course, its a big yes from me to you. In fact, rasam can be daily for us until I usually make rasam in big quantity and store in the fridge. Thereafter, warmed up for the next day's meal or maybe a few days in a row meals. That's why I think all my previous rasam recipes can speak for themselves on their own ( Mor Rasam, Nandu Rasam, Rasam, Egg Rasam & Instant Rasam)? Joining the list now is this Pepper Garlic Rasam. Obviously, what else you want me to say? Pretty much nothing much except I should repeat that rasam is forever appreciated.

FIsh Ball Noodle Soup

Fish Ball Noodle Soup. No, no. Not market bought fish balls, but made from a scratch, home made fish balls. Yes. Indeed. I made fish balls for a change. Can you believe it? For someone like me who is, if not always, sometimes taking the door to ready made ingredients (Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup, Sichuan Noodle Soup &  Bee Hoon Soup), I actually did it for these fish balls in noodles and soup. Why, are you asking me? Well, what should I tell you? Maybe because I wanted fish broth (Cambodian Sour Fish Soup & Vietnamese Fish Soup) from the bones after carefully stripping away fish flesh (Yong Tau Foo) for fish balls. Not bad right? I know. In fact, we had a ball of a time over this Fish Ball Noodle Soup. Really bouncy and no smell soft fish balls, and as I have already told you, fish bones and skin simmered for extracting the broth (Nyonya Spicy Fish Noodle Soup, Salted Fish Bone SoupThai Fish Noodle Soup & Penang Assam Laksa). Next? Hand crafted and hand rolled fish balls cooked in the broth till they floated atop and together with the broth, generously poured over noodles, garnished with fried shallots and fried basil leaves atop just my invention at the spur of the moment from the basil leaves grown in my garden. Of course, you can use spring onion or even coriander leaves. Conclusively, Fish Ball Noodle Soup, wouldn't you agree is making your hungry right now and imagine, what a feeling when tucked in during and after rain has fallen down from the sky (Hokkien Hae Mee, Chinese Chicken Noodle Soup & Chinese Vegetable Noodle Soup)?

Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup

Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup made in my Malaysian kitchen. Why not (Hong Kong Steamed Fish)? Who told you, you can't make Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup in your Malaysian kitchen? Not me. I in fact have already proven it. This is the Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup as per our Malaysian locality and pretty much, tell me please. How different can our local Wonton Noodle Soup be compared to those made in Hong Kong? Pretty much more or less the same ingredients, but considering that Halal food is quite a demand in Malaysia, I made this prawn halal version (Mee Goreng Udang/Prawn Fried Mee, Hokkien Hae Mee, Cantonese Yee Mee & Hakka Noodles). The start to making of course must be making the wonton dumplings and if prawn (Prawn Coconut Milk, Prawn CocktailChinese Prawn Fritters) is not favorable to you, please proceed with chicken (Chicken Wonton Soup & Chinese Chicken Meatball Soup) or pork to be filled and wrapped in store bought wanton skin and these wanton parcels can be crispy fried (Fried Shrimp Wonton) as well. The next course of action for wonton (Sichuan Chilli Prawns)? Into the soup and alongside the soup ladled into the bowl of wonton noodles and kai lan, garnished with spring onion, and teamed with green chillies soy sauce (Chinese Vegetable Noodle Soup).

Indian Yogurt Soup

We Indians, yes, I am one all right,  don't we love our Indian soups (Dhal Vegetable Soup & Indian Onion Soup Spinach Tomato Soup)? Yes please. Of course. I can also strongly vouch that no other Indian soup can comparatively trend real close to our magical, healthy and nourishing Rasam/Indian Pepper Soup, I might as well include the healthy or not so healthy Sodhi/Indian Coconut Milk Stew. Indian soups by far, I think I may have told you before, though I can't exactly right now remember if I did, never mind, let me repeat myself again. No harm done. Indian soups are usually light and runny, for a typical Indian meal, we Indians actually prefer to drench our soups over rice. Akin a gravy dish for us, Indian soups I believe can stand at par alongside Chinese, Malay and Thai soup (Chinese Chicken Herbal Soup, Mushroom Yee Mee Soup, Old Cucumber Soup, Chinese Burdock Soup, Tom Yam Seafood SoupChinese Chicken Watercress Soup Fish Bendi Soup), but I think better not be compared to Western style thick soups (Asian Green Peas SoupPumpkin Garlic Soup  & Basil Tomato Soup).

Chinese Ginseng Chicken Soup

Roots, barks, herbs and chicken. Pretty much the centrality for Chinese Ginseng Chicken Soup. Of course, we do have a choice to the high rank and grade Korean ginseng (Korean Radish Soup), but for me personally, its a big no due to its bitterness and strong content. I in fact have tasted Korean ginseng tea and soups which I really couldn't digest and trust me, I almost not only throw up, I actually felt as though my body is on fire. Chinese ginseng (Chinese Chicken Herbal Soup) on the other hand is mild even in soups and I also fancy those home made healthy and nutritious Chinese soups, including the vegetarian variants (Chinese Vegetable Noodle Soup, Old Cucumber Soup, Chinese Tofu Soup & Burdock Root Soup).

Moroccan Pea Soup

I wouldn't and couldn't stop. In fact, I don't want to. I want to put my hands to as many cuisines from throughout the globe. Most probably because of this burning desire within me for learning to cook and these days, you can sit in front of your laptop and learn. So simple and so easy to learning and also picking up the vital tips to cooking. Of course, you can't do it in a jiffy. Instead, you have to put your heart and soul in firstly searching for recipes and then whether you are apt for copying exactly or allowing your thinking to wonder for coining your own dishes. So far I have achieved quite a good bit. The types of dishes I have made (Mongolian Prawns & Punjabi Sabut Moong Dal) from my own initiative and I must also thank the virtual world because admittedly, the food research in the virtual world did help. Moreover, when soups are a concern, should I, must I blow my own trumpet (Cambodian Sour Fish Soup, Chinese Vegetable Soup, Kashmiri Vegetable SoupKorean Radish Soup & Japanese Lotus Root Soup)? No right right? Your reading action and reaction I think will unveil all of it?

Cambodian Sour Fish Soup

Just in case you are wondering how do I know to make Cambodian Sour Fish Soup, there's nothing for me to say right (Angkor Wat & Siem Reap)? No point repeating over and over like a parrot right (Phnom Penh Noodle Soup)? Furthermore, I shouldn't also mention their neighboring country Vietnam (Vietnamese Steamed Fish & Vietnamese Fish Soup)?  Pretty much logically, I don't need a long intro for substantiating this Cambodian Sour Fish Soup. Thank god! Nevertheless, it will be good if I relate some of the fish recipes I have already shared with all you beautiful people (Indian Fish Curry, Asam Pedas, Thai Crispy Fish, Steamed White Pompret & Ikan Masak Kicap) and what is the cooking story to Cambodian Sour Fish Soup? Oh, so easy, so uncomplicated, so straightforward, so food slurping and you add local veggies. Notably, mine had to okra/bendi/ladies fingers and I added some turmeric powder for bright hue and extra flavor (Nyonya Fish SoupThai Fish Soup & Mutton Soup).

Nyonya Hot and Sour Noodles in Fish Soup

Cooking can be interpreted in different ways to all of us. For the most of us, cooking basically is about ensuring a healthy home cooked meal in a clean environment compared to exposing ourselves to what not when we eat out. Of course definitely if you are asking me and I will totally vouch nothing like a home meal even if its just basic and simple dishes. You can include me in this category of women who make it a point in cooking, but every now and then, cooking for me personally is about setting my own bar against how better I can cook. Basically, I like the thing of allowing my mind to wonder for my own invention. Rather challenging for oiling my thinking cap and which does land me in the zone of happiness whenever I come up with my invented dishes. Take this Nyonya Hot and Sour Noodles in Fish Soup which is actually the other door to Assam Laksa, and I have already previously opened two doors (Malaysian Sour Spicy Fish Soup Noodles & Penang Assam Laksa).

Chinese Vegetable Noodle Soup

Don't ask me why and what not, I really can't tell you why even among the Chinese, there are vegetarians (Vegetarian Fried Mee HoonChinese Vegetarian Noodle Soup). Most probably due to religionism, I believe so and like the Indians, more and more Chinese (Chinese Herbal Chicken SoupChinese Fried Rice, Chay Kway TeowChicken Wanton Soup & Cantonese Yee Mee) are now opting for vegetarianism. Beat me why. Honestly I don't know. As it is, I myself am not a vegetarian, (Chinese Chicken Noodle Soup & Hakka Noodles) neither will I want to be because I can't be a meatless person, nor I am trying hard. Of course, every now and then, in fact my other half-half is a vegetarian (Vegetarian Chow Mein) every Saturday, not me though but I don't actually mind a vegetarian meal and I quite like the concept to a tasty to like this Chinese Vegetable Noodle Soup mostly, plus cooking such dishes mind you is not really mind boggling. Nevertheless, a flavorful vegetable broth definitely is a must (Old Cucumber Soup & Burdock Root Soup). Otherwise, vegetable noodle soup dishes will taste bland, and you can either make the broth or get the ready made store bought ones. Whichever, up to you and for this style Chinese Vegetable Noodle Soup, I doubt you will struggle in getting the ingredients as listed below. This my style Chinese Vegetable Nodle Soup seriously is flavorsome and unbeatable.

Kashmiri Vegetable Soup

Helloo everyone,
The rain. Rain and none more, When it rains, I also get lazy (Corn Soup, Chinese Tofu Soup, Lentil Vegetable Soup & Creamy Mushroom Soup). You know how rainy weather is right? You just feel like dropping everything aside and cuddling in bed doing nothing (Thai Tomato Soup, Japanese Lotus Root Soup & Korean Radish Soup). Of course, career must go on. Wish we can work escape. We can actually because October is the month you should start thinking about clearing your annual leave. Otherwise, trust me, some companies are merciless. Come beginning of another new year or the cut of point, your leave will be conveniently forfeited. Tell me about such companies? Thus, when rainy season begins, maybe its one of the best times for you to take leave if you have no purpose of keeping your leave and like I have already told you, sit back, rest back and enjoy your time at home over a serving of such inviting, almost luxurious, smooth to all our senses and mildly spicy Kashmir Vegetable Soup (Lamb Rogan Josh). Kashmir and their soups? Oh-wonderful (Old Cucumber Soup). Of course, as usual, we need spices and a  tinge of Kashmiri chilli powder for that heat which definitely our body can relate to cold weather (Vegan Pumpkin Soup) and for the vegetables, potato (Vegan Potato Curry & Aloo Gobi) is a fondness like in most, in fact in all countries throughout the world or whatever local produce vegetables will do (Rice Pilaf, Vegetable Kadhi, Hyderabadi Vegetable Biryani & Andra Sambar).

Old Cucumber Soup

Old Cucumber, or some of you may like to call it as Matured Cucumber. Up to you. Its really up to you how you prefer to call this aged and also known as yellow gourd. And of course, it must be according to the Chinese (Chick Kut TehChinese Black Vinegar Chicken & Salted Fish Bone Soup) because I don't think old cucumber is a familiarity to us Indians, unless maybe you are another Indian like me who love Chinese food (Chap Chai) and soups, old cucumber is hailed for its health benefits (Burdock Root Soup & Winter Melon Soup). Especially for those of you like me, me again right, who every and now then feel as though you are gutted by fire. In other words, you want to ditch aside heatiness from your body. Without a doubt, a familiarity for old cucumber soup is usually simmering it over low heat or in the slow cooker or some prefer double boiling, alongside pork bones or chicken (Chinese Chicken Herbal Soup) but this nava-k's version is a vegetarian and vegan slurpiness (Vegan Pumpkin Soup, Thai Tomato Soup, Portuguese Potato Soup & Japanese Lotus Root Soup). Furthermore, who on earth ever said making Chinese soups is a brain cracker? Not at all foodies. Anyone for the matter who has a stove and a pot can make. How do we make this Old Cucumber Soup? Old cucumber, wolf-berries and ginkgo nuts, plus our pantry staples and vegetable stock, just simmer please (Creamy Mushroom Soup, Chinese Tofu Soup, Lentil Vegetable Soup, Tomato Spinach Soup & Mixed Vegetable Soup).

Moo Gook (Korean Radish Soup)

We are going places, are we not, or should I say that I am actually the one taking you all over the world for home cooking food trail? I think I am. Pretty much we have been food travelling together, obviously in the virtual world, we can be at home and still head to all the different food destinations in any part of the world? Shall we now recall where we have gone so far? Of course everything must begin in our home ground Malaysia (Chinese Mixed Vegetable Stew, Onion Soup, Lentil Vegetable Soup & Burdock Root Soup) and particularly for soups, we did head to other countries as well. More or less (Vietnamese Fish Soup, Chinese Chicken Herbal Soup & Tom Yum Goong), then again, with cooking invention and cooking thinking, anything is possibly? I mean, the marrying of cooking technics and ingredients from different parts of the world (Salted Fish Bone Soup) and in Malaysia by itself, there's not only the three main races? In fact, there is no short of, you name it, the various types of food from the rest of the ethnic community? Furthermore, when we speak about vegetarianism, vegetarianism in our country and elsewhere too (Vegetarian Pumpkin Soup, Portuguese Caldo Verde SoupThai Tomato SoupJapanese Vegetable Soup & Chinese Tofu Soup). What about this Moo Gook, aka Korean Radish Soup? A vegetarian soup, or if you really feel you like to convert it to a non-vegetarian soup, I think beef is the meat you should add. Otherwise, just stick to my version of vegetarian Moo Gook. Moo Gook, aka Korean Radish Soup? Super smooth utter satisfaction by our home affairs common ingredients, except for buying Korean radish and Korean soy sauce.

Vegan Pumpkin Soup

Month of August and sure, rain is falling from sky. So far, nothing worrying nor rain has flooded our area, but when it rains almost daily, our life is woman interrupted right? Potentially. Clothes taking longer to dry up and we must be careful on the roads due to puddles of water sometimes we can't see from the distance. Having said that, food must go on because we either live to eat or eat to live. If you are asking me, basically, food must enter our tummy. Whatever kinda food, but wouldn't you agree that soups (Mixed Vegetable Soup, Corn Soup & Turmeric Tomato Soup) will complete us for rainy weather? Especially for a night meal and when you don't want to pack yourself with heavy meal, yet a meal for keeping us warm and cuddly? Maybe not as in the light, runny and watery mild soups I have already mentioned (Chinese Tofu Soup & Lentil Vegetable Soup), but this thick and creamy (Creamy Avocado Dip) and a totality to veganism (Vegan Potato Curry) absolutely wonderful Vegan Pumpkin Soup, paired alongside toast (Caldo Verde, Thai Tomato Soup & Creamy Mushroom Soup). Sort of also can be considered as a cousin to my previous (Pumpkin Soup) and definitely for celebration pumpkin (Pumpkin Salted Fish Curry).

Caldo Verde

Caldo Verde! What is Caldo Verde? Caldo Verde is a popular soup in Portuguese cuisine and if I am not mistaken, firstly making its presence known in Northern Portugal. How do I know about Portuguese dishes? Well, we in Malaysia have been exposed to the influence of Portuguese cooking and food from back then, back then ages ago. Says it all I suppose? Me and my Portuguese dishes  (Egg VindalooDevilled Prawns, Pada Salt Fish Pickle & Chicken Devil Curry)?  Of course, I should also include the other types of soups I have invested my cooking time in? The various types, and my recipes, as usual, won't kill your money  and time (Thai Tomato SoupBurdock Root Soup, Tomato Spinach Soup, Onion Soup, Tom Yum Goong & Salted Fish Bone Soup). This my version of Caldo Verde? A vegetarian version (Lentil Vegetable Soup). Thick, creamy and luscious (Creamy Mushroom Soup) as an utter satisfaction, and the key central ingredients are potatoes (Vegan Potato Curry & Potato Egg Curry) and kale. Slurrrppp!!

Moroccan Chicken Stew

Guys, I think I am trying to achieve international status cooking style. I think so. God! I am actually going all over the world, but not as in being in different countries. What I am trying to say is that I am trying recipes of different kinds from, this and that part of the world. Of course, Malaysian dishes are part and parcel of my cooking style and when we speak about Malaysian food, its not just my own kind dishes (Indian Masala Chicken CurryChicken Curry Potatoes & Chicken Varuval), I must also include other races and religion food delight (Chicken Devil Curry, Ayam Masak Merah & Easy Chicken Kebab). Furthermore, didn't you notice my Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and the rest of the dishes from other parts of the world too (Thai Tomato SoupVietnamese Fish, Unagi Kabayaki & Bengali Fish Curry)? Of course, the list goes on and I can go on and on, so on and so forth, and quote other recipes as well (Egg Vindaloo, Hong Kong Style Steamed Fish, Egg Benedict, Prawn Cocktail, Rice Pilaf & Aloo Gosht). Much has already been spoken about, wouldn't you agree? Much has been unveiled on how far I have come and gone, and today, let's do this Moroccan Chicken Stew. As usual, let's work with the ingredients we already have in hand, maybe you need to get if not all, some of the ingredients? That too depends on you or you can look for the substitute in your kitchen as well. Moroccan Chicken Stew? Waking up your palates thick stew and succulent chicken deliciousness!

KKSV Restaurant: Malaysian Coffeeshop Eating Culture

Formerly recognized as Restoran Poh Yap, this establishment underwent refurbishment a few months ago and now goes by the name KKSV Restauran...
