Appam Palace - Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam

End dining area in a modern Indian restaurant.
Making its presence known just over a week ago in Kota Kemuning, Appam Palace is already drawing attention among residents near and far. This is the second outlet, following the first in Rawang.

Located on the left just before the first main roundabout in Kota Kemuning (13, Jalan Anggerik Aranda BG 31/BG, Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam), Appam Palace occupies a single lot in the front row of the shoplots (beside Gula Cakery). There is ample parking, and the outlet is set in a modern yet Indian-inspired ambiance. Cosy, clean, and welcoming, those who arrive during off-peak hours will have no problem securing a table (CLASSIC THAI FOOD).

The menu is extensive, and may take five to ten minutes to decide what to order. The highlight is the variety of appams, from mini versions with various toppings, available in both sweet and savoury options. There are also specific tea time selections (BREAD PUDDING MALAYSIAN STYLE).

Beyond appams, the menu includes local delights such as “Sizzling Nasi Lemak”, along with Western-style finger foods, snacks, and mains. Beverage options include hot drinks such as classic chai and bru coffee, alongside desserts, making the spread quite comprehensive.

While “Pani Puri” is highlighted as a must-try on the menu, it was not available during this Friday early lunch visit. Regardless, other options were selected, and orders were keyed in by the staff using a tablet.

Hot beverages arrived shortly after. The cow’s milk bru coffee, requested without sugar (the chosen drink for the Sizzling Sardine Nasi Lemak), was served in a traditional brass Indian tumbler and holder. It was piping hot, so caution is needed as it can be uncomfortable to hold immediately. Taste-wise, it could have been slightly creamier, but still acceptable.

The Masala Spiced Chai Hot (RM6.90) stood out. It was authentic without being overpowering in spices, sugar, or milk, and well-balanced.

The Special Cheese Nachos (RM13.90) were visually appealing. Loaded with melted cheese and a thick creamy white sauce, likely sour cream. The generous cheese portion will appeal to cheese lovers, and the portion is good value.

The Sizzling Sardine Nasi Lemak (RM14.90) lived up to its name. The sardine gravy (SARDINE SAMBAL RECIPE) poured onto the hot plate, creating a satisfying sizzle, and paired with coconut rice, fried egg, peanuts, anchovies, keropok and cucumber slices. In short, tasty.

Cow's Milk Bru Coffee served in bras round container, and tumbler.

A mug of spiced masala chai. Indian tea.

Nachos generously topped with oozy cheese and creamy sour cream.

Sizzling coconut milk rice, atop with fried egg, paired with spicy sardine, fried anchovies and peanuts, sliced cucumber and fried fritters.
The highlight remains the appams. The Combo Mix Appam (RM15.90) allows selection of two types from the menu. It is served with coconut milk for both the palm sugar and milk appams. The presentation is refined, with a crisp outer layer and soft centre. For smaller eaters, one appam is already quite filling. Appam clearly stands out as one of the main highlights.

The Petite Cheesecake (RM12.90) taken away, is a rich and indulgent dessert. It is quite sweet, which may be overwhelming for those sensitive to high sugar levels. Still, it is worth trying, presented neatly in a heart-shaped container.

Two pieces of appam, the traditional and palm sugar appam, coconut milk served separately.

Appam Palace is a modern yet traditional Indian restaurant that offers a thoughtfully curated menu, a comfortable ambiance, and attentive customer service. Depending on the selection, it can be considered reasonably priced (total bill: RM64.00), with portions that are not compromised.
