Kota Belud Travel Guide, Sabah Malaysia

While Kuala Penyu (KUALA PENYU TRAVEL GUIDE) offers a quiet coastal escape, Kota Belud deserves equal attention on your Sabah itinerary. Located in the northwestern part of Sabah, it’s easily accessible whether you're travelling from Kuala Penyu (approximately a 2-hour drive via Putatan, Inanam, Suromboton, and Kampung Kobusak) or from Kota Kinabalu (about 1 hour via Inanam and Kg. Kelawat).

Along the drive, you’ll pass by small towns, rural stretches, and roadside stalls,  ideal for a short stop to enjoy local snacks or a meal before arriving in Kota Belud.

Discovering Kota Belud

Often referred to as the "Land of the Cowboys of the East," Kota Belud is known for its traditional Bajau horsemen and the weekly Tamu market, where locals gather to trade fresh produce, spices, and handmade items. With Mount Kinabalu in the distance and vast paddy fields across the landscape, Kota Belud offers scenic countryside charm and a deeper look into Sabah’s rural life (CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA SIGHTSEEING).

Whether you’re planning a half-day visit or a full-day trip, the town offers meaningful nature experiences and cultural encounters.

Wildlife Safari & Nature-Based Activities

Kota Belud is home to several nature and wildlife experiences, particularly focused on river and mangrove ecosystems. The main options include:

Kawa-Kawa River Cruise

A longer, immersive tour (approx. 7–8 hours) that includes both day and night wildlife sightings. Expect to see proboscis monkeys, otters, water buffalo, hornbills, and fireflies after sunset.

Tamau/Nanamun River Cruise

A shorter cruise (2–3 hours), ideal for those with limited time. This journey focuses on proboscis monkeys, mangrove birds, and firefly viewing at night.

Langga Mangrove Boardwalk

A tranquil walk through the mangroves with opportunities to observe birds and potentially spot monkeys. A good choice for those who prefer exploring on foot.

Tamau River Wildlife River Cruise Experience

At the Tamau River departure point, tickets can be purchased on-site. While waiting for the boat, visitors are often entertained by caged talking birds, known for mimicking animal and human sounds, a lighthearted touch to the otherwise nature-focused experience (MOUNT MERAPI INDONESIA JEEP TOUR).

Once on the river, the cruise winds through dense mangrove forests, offering glimpses of proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and other bird species. The calm waters and untouched greenery make it a peaceful and engaging way to experience Sabah’s biodiversity.

Pantai Batu Gadung: A Nearby Beach Stop

Located within walking distance from the Tamau River jetty, Pantai Batu Gadung is a quiet coastal stretch. It’s a good spot to pass time before the evening firefly cruise. You can walk along the shoreline, feel the breeze, and watch the sun set over the horizon.

If you have more time, consider a visit to Pantai Nanamun, about 30 minutes from Kota Belud town. Though less known, it offers similar sunset views and a peaceful atmosphere. However, Pantai Batu Gadung is equally serene and far more convenient if you're already near Tamau.

Firefly Safari (Night Cruise)

The firefly safari begins once night falls. Boats depart with engines and lights dimmed to avoid disturbing the fireflies. As you glide along the river, clusters of tiny lights begin to appear among the mangroves, a calm, magical experience. Photography is not permitted during this portion of the cruise to protect the natural behaviour of the fireflies.

Kota Belud may not be packed with attractions, but that’s what makes it special. It’s quiet, laid-back, and shows you the slower side of Sabah. Whether it’s walking by the beach, spotting monkeys along the river, or watching fireflies at night, it’s the kind of place where you take it slow and just enjoy what’s around you.

There are also some local eateries if you’re staying a bit longer or need a meal before heading back.
