Chilli Sardine

Sardines. Whether canned sardines (Sardine Peratal & Sardine Sambal) or fresh sardines (Mathi Achar & Nyonya Acar Fish). Ahhhh! Sardines. They are, believe me you, they are my biggest savior in my kitchen. Pretty much, or logically, why, the reasoning to me having rolled out a string of sardine recipes this far (Tempoyak Masak Lemak SardineSardine Varuval, Naden Meen Curry & Sardin Masak Lemak Cili Padi). Furthermore. Sardines. Usually. Generally. Especially canned sardines? One of my greatest cooking support, stocked up in my pantry. Albeit, if not every often, whenever, fresh sardines are available, they must and they will somehow return home alongside me from the wet market or hypermarket (Nyonya Hot and Sour Noodles In Fish SoupNasi Ulam/ Malaysian Mixed Herb Rice & Penang Assam Laksa) and to a certain extent, when my "My Fifty Five Life" cooking style is a concern (Sardine Rolls)? Sure. You can and you must put your trust towards Nava K's easy style to cooking as well. Today, my dearest ladies and gentlemen, my dearest supporters, I am featuring another style to simplicity sardine dish. Chilli Sardine. Pretty much, yea, canned sardines alright and as for the rest of the ingredients, please don't start sweat dripping now. Because, these ingredients are part and parcel of our pantry friendly ingredients. Right. Let's cook. Cook with Nava K.

Masak Lemak Sayur (Malay Style Vegan Coconut Milk Stew)

Of course. Anything is possible. Including a Malay style vegan coconut stew. Who said you can't?  Who? Who is saying. No. Not me though. In fact, this recipe of mine, evidently? Pretty much, proven. Our Malay or Malaysian vegan or vegetarian coconut milk stew (Sayur Lodeh VegetarianGado Gado Vegetarian & Vegetable Kurma). Coconut Milk (Vegetarian Nyonya Laksa, Vegetarian Nasi Lemak  & Vegetarian Mutton Rendang). Oh yes! Once said as the disaster for our health. But today, the same smart ones are professing that coconut milk or even, because coconut oil has been re-branded as "virgin coconut oil", these are for our healthiness. As if, like, our Malaysian coconut milk (Curry Mee Vegetarian) and coconut oil has never been virgins. Damn! How ingredients theories can be twisted and turned. By the way, for your information, I'm not a virgin or even "like a virgin". Hehehe!! I speak the truth and nothing but the truth. Tadaa!!

Chinese Style Eggplant

Eggplant. Sure. Truly and sincerely. A favourite in my house and eggplant, the edible fruit which, by far, as far as I know, pretty much really affordable as well. Like, you can pick up two or three eggplant, for, let's say, RM3.00 and the other I must say is that, you can convert eggplant to various types of dishes (Eggplant Tikka Masala, Japanese Eggplant Saute, Thai Style Eggplant & Indian Style Fried Eggplant). Of course. I know better because, if you are looking for eggplant recipes, look no further. Whether eggplant by itself, or into curries or gravies (Goan Prawn CurryNadal Meen/Fish CurryVegetable Kurma & Dhal Mutton Curry). Also, either as a vegetarian or non-vegetarian meal tucking in. Eggplant. Yes. They are, mind you, from same purple or green family. Eggplant, or brinjal (Terong Balado Pedas ManisEnnai Kathrikai Kuzambu/Brinjal Curry, Baingan Bharta & Brinjal Stir Fry) or aubergine (Thai Green Fish Curry & Thai Vegetable Curry).

Bitter Gourd Omelette

Says it all I suppose.  Bitter Gourd. Either, you love bitter gourd or you don't. Of course, there's no two ways about it. However, trust me, believe me, when age comes popping in front of us or we decide to put put age behind us, we will somehow embrace bitter gourd. We will. And why it is so? Well, for a fact, we have digested the fact that, anything bitter is the healthy, bullet truth to health is wealth (Pachai Sundakkai Kulambu/Fresh Turkey Berry Curry). After all. The biggest fear as we grow older. I don't know about you, for me personally, nothing is more important than keeping my health so, so, so close to my body, mind and soul. Bitter gourd. As you know or don't, already classified as the health is wealth unique vegetable-fruit, and bitter gourd, you must believe me, can be converted to various types of dishes. Whether you prefer all the bitterness, as bitter as bitter gourd can be, or you prefer to remove some of the bitterness by soaking sliced bitter gourd in salt water prior to cooking.

Kacang Buncis Kunyit (Beans Turmeric)

Healthy living (Murungai Keerai Poriyal, Malaysian Vegetarian Spaghetti & Cucumber Yogurt Salad). Yes. Yes. The whole world is like, won't and can't stop preaching about healthy eating, healthy ingredients and healthy cooking. Honestly, I, to a certain extent, am quite lost on what's with the obsession to healthy living. In fact, every where daily. Social media, whatsapp groups, daily conversations, etc, etc, etc. God! Like what? Am I like the only one who is missing out on healthiness? Anyway, let's now narrow down specifically on healthy cooking. Organic ingredients, or using specific ingredients for our cooking or, you tell me please? If you are asking me, there is no better healthier food on earth than our home cooked meals, cooked in a clean environment. Home food for me personally is the ultimate healthy living. Alright, in tandem to healthy cooking, here's to a healthy dish. Kacang Buncis Kunyit, aka Beans Turmeric. Turmeric powder and garlic (Garlic Tomato Rasam) as you know, or don't? Of course, health is wealth ingredients and this dish, a totality to vegetarianism or veganism, yeppie yeh to further healthiness as well (Vegan Tom Yam Soup, Mixed Vegetable SoupVegetable Kadhi)? Kacang Buncis Kunyit (Beans Turmeric). No hassle cooking and pantry friendly ingredients (Baingan Bharta). Except, maybe, for buying the beans or all the better, if they are from your garden (Moroccan Pea Soup).

Bubur Pulut Hitam (Black Glutinous Rice Sweet Porridge)

Bubur Pulut Hitam. Black Glutinous Rice Sweet Porridge. Ohhh yeess, and yes, and yes. My favourite sugar rushing or non-rushing dessert. In fact, for a fact, this easy to put together sweet porridge (Bubur Kacang Hijau/Green Bean Sweet Porridge) has conquered the number one spot amongst the rest of our Malaysian desserts for me personally. How do we make Bubur Pulut Hitam (Black Glutinous Rice Sweet Porridge)? Very easy. Uncomplicated. Simmer and add the few ingredients as listed below and there you have - soft tender black glutinous rice, scented by pandan/screwpine leaves (Kuih Buah Melaka & Pandan Cheesecake), sweetened by white or brown sugar or Gula Melaka/palm sugar and creaminess from coconut milk. You can if you like, add sago as well (Pumpkin Sago Dessert & Malaysian Sago Pudding) and Bubur Pulut Hitam can be a choice between, either a cold or hot sweet dessert.

Vegan Tofu Sambal

Veganism. What is veganism? Veganism (Vegan Thai Fried Rice & Vegan Pumpkin Soup), basically is, the higher leveling up to vegetarianism (Fresh Turkey Berry Curry & Malaysian Vegetarian Spaghetti). Am I a vegan? No. I am not. Will I be able to tell you why vegans don't consume not only meat, but also dairy products? To a certain extent and most probably, if I am not mistaken, due to health reasons and perhaps I should also include religionism as well. For me personally, anything goes except beef and exotic meat. What about vegan food? Actually, come to think of it, I don't mind every now and then. Nothing wrong right? Of course not. After all, food is food, and even if its vegan dish, like this Vegan Tofu (Mapo Tofu & Tofu Katsu) Sambal, trust me, we don't compromise on food deliciousness.

Saag Aloo (Spinach And Potatoes)

Saag (Chloe Palak) Aloo or Aloo (Sukhi Aloo Sabzi) Saag. I actually called this dish as aloo saag in my YouTube video. Then again? Due to the majority calling it saag aloo? Let is be saag aloo. Having said that or whatever or however you like to address Saag Aloo or Aloo Saag, it all boils down to the combination of two central ingredients. Spinach (Spinach Lamb Spaghetti) and potatoes. Furthermore, if I am not mistaken, saag aloo (Tari Wale Aloo, Aloo Gobi & Vegetarian Potato Sambal) is definitely a popularity amongst the Indians. Whichever part of the world they are? Even the Westerners? Oh-my! They sure have fast caught up in the count of cooking such an Indian dish. In fact, Westerners showcasing saag aloo recipes? The number of recipes popping up in case you are more inclined to a Westerner's saag aloo? How about this Saag Aloo cooking style of mine? No, no. Not a totality to a different kinda. Pretty much a familiarity. But, a sincere home style, non-spicy kid friendly version (Tomato Spinach Soup) without compromising on the core quintessential, appreciated delightful tastes. And for which you don't need aplenty ingredients. Indeed, healthiness as well (Spinach Tofu Stir Fry & Spinach Sambar/Dhal Curry). A side dish for rice or for sandwiching between toast.

Stir Fried Oyster Mushrooms

I'm not sure. In fact, I am rather confused about, what is healthy cooking for healthy living. Seriously guys,  I can't comprehend and I really don't know how should I go about explaining healthy cooking and healthy eating (Moringa/Drumstick Leaves Stir Fried). For me personally, I eat anything. Anything in other words, everything in moderation and I do, from time to time, indulge in sinful guilty food pleasures. Of course, not gawking those heavy duty rich food daily, but when the craving kicks in. I am really fine. No guilty feeling due to me not the pigging out kinda and me exercising regularly. Still, trust me, controlling my weight and also, avoiding tiredness, body pain and headache which every now and then can literally pull me down? Not an easy feat for Nava K who is 54, going 55.

Pachai Sundakkai Kulambu (Fresh Turkey Berry Curry)

Not only fish curry (South Indian Style Fish Curry). In fact, any curry for the matter in my house? A must. Yes. Without a doubt. Not for me though. I am okay in exploring various types of dishes, but for my Indian other half-half I have been faithfully married for the last 17 years? Curry, curry and curry (Mushroom/Kaalan Sour Curry) for every other meal (Spinach Chickpea Curry, Brinjal Curry & Vegetable Kadhi). Basically, no curry, no food hunger or food happiness for him. Perhaps, if I am not mistaken, can I take it as, its the same curry cooking story in your house as well if you are married to a typical Indian man (Navratan Korma & Pavakkai/Bitter Gourd Puli Kuzhambu)? Unless, of course, your husband don't mind cooking his own curries (Okra Curry & Drumstick Sambar/Dhal Curry) and he also lovingly cooking meals for you too. Anyhow, whether you are the chef at home or its your spouse, this pot of Nava K invented Pachai Sundakkai Kulambu/ Fresh Turkey Berry Curry. A power house, spicy, tangy vegetarian authentic Indian style curry. Sincerely worth being made in your kitchen too. Trust me, won't let down your and your loved ones tastebuds.

South Indian Style Fish Curry

Fish curry in my house (Thai Green Fish Curry, Asam Pedas Ikan Bawal & Malaysian Fish Head Curry)? What can or should I possibly say? If not once a week, at least every fortnight. Even if it’s not fish curry, there must be some sort of fried fish various types (Fried Fish Soy Sauce, Ikan Goreng Asam & Thai Crispy Fish). Obviously for the matter every few days once due to? Fish being the brain food for my other half-half. Mmmm? Cooking for our loved or loving ones? You tell me please. I am sure you know what I am talking about? Easier said than done I suppose and we women mostly, in fact, all the time making it a point in cooking what our loved ones will pleasure into. Furthermore, over the years, honestly, though I did try, I have given up on trying to coax my other half-half in trying chicken (Karaikudi Chicken Curry) or pork (Pork Bulgogi). Not worth because trust me, food can actually rock the marriage boat. Especially when age has caught up and you realize that you don't have anymore energy in trying to change your husband's food likes or dislikes. Instead, better to leave them alone and just go with the flow by cooking the food they will pleasure into.

Malay Style Udang Sambal

Yes. Of course. There is infinitely, as far as I know, various types of Udang Sambal or as per say, Sambal Udang (Sambal Goreng Udang Pete). Udang Sambal obviously, if you are asking me, is a popular Malaysian dish and specifically the originality of Malay cooking. And I? Do I have to repeat myself again and again? I just so love Malay food and sambal (Sardine Sambal & Sambal Tumis Telur)? Oh my sambal! Trust me, a spicy Malaysian delight, perhaps I must include Indonesian various types of sambal as well (Ikan Cabe Ijo) and Malay Style Udang Sambal? Truly, such an authentic cooking style, but somehow not the same as the Chinese style or Indian style Udang Sambal. For Indian Style Udang Sambal, its mostly curry powder and curry leaves, whereas Chinese Style Udang Sambal (Sichuan Chilli Prawns), specifically a Nyonya style, more or less, pretty much to a certain extent, can be trended somewhat to Malay Style Udang Sambal (Nyonya Okra Sambal). Still, I will vouch that nothing can out-beat or over-take a Malay Style Udang Sambal (Sambal Belimbing Ikan Bilis). Malay Style Udang Sambal! The absolute full-flavored, greatest good tempting power house. Alright foodies. Grab this recipe of Nava K.

Vegetarian Potato Sambal

Vegetarianism and Nava K. Oh pleaseeee!!! Please don't put us side by side. Honestly everyone, vegetarianism is definitely out of the question for me. Neither will I force it on me for the sake of doing it or just because others are willingly or blindly jumping into the back wagon of vegetarianism. Seemingly, I may be wrong, but obviously, people are under the impression that if you are a vegetarian, you are a symbol of healthy living. For the Hindus as well, if not all, at least the rest, they are under the impression that abstaining from meat is a sign of holiness (Mushroom Curry/Kaalan Puli Kulambu). Really? I am not going to say anything further. Hindus, believe me, they are really sensitive if you talk about their religion. Anyway, whether you are a healthy grain or holy grain or not, there is such a thing as being a part-time vegetarian right (Vegetarian Nyonya Laksa & Nasi Minyak)? Why not? Whenever we feel we should or we want to instead of allowing others in pressuring us?

Ikan Cabe Ijo

Cooking at home or eating out? Which is cheaper? Yes please. Would love your opinion, but for the time being, if you are asking me, I must say that its quite a confusing matter as per say. Why? Because our opinion differs. Of course. To each our own. We decide what is best for us. Still, I can or I shouldn't discount that eating out may be cheaper for a single person. Provided you not a fussy eater and you are eating for the purpose of filling up your hunger. Basically, you won’t mind any kind of food from anywhere. A basic meal from coffee shops or road side stalls most probably? No harm done. I'm not saying anything more because we eat according to what we can afford instead of burning our money bridge. How about we now address the matter to eating out for a family of four? Mum, dad and two kids. Still cheap if we are talking about a basic meal again? Minimum, we paying most to most, we can cap the amount to within RM20.00 for each meal each time?

Nyonya Okra Sambal

Nyonya me (Vegetarian Nyonya Laksa). Nyonya you (Stir Fried Jicama). Right. Me the home chef who can share my expertise on Nyonya cuisine (Mee Siam Kuah Vegetarian). Willingly of course. As an add-value for my professional as a life coach. Why can't I not or why  shouldn't I by the way? My Nyonya recipes (Ayam Masak Keluak) speaking for themselves and me having belted quite a good number of years to Nyonya cuisine cooking in my kitchen (Nyonya Acar Fish). Obviously, there are no short. No short? That's right. No short of Nyonya recipes (Nyonya Hot and Sour Fish Noodles) in this precious space of mine which, again said, is like a bonus for my clients and anyone for the matter.

Sardine Peratal

Sardine Peratal? Sort of the next door to Sardine Varuval. I might as well include Sardine Sambal too. Plus, if I can, I would definitely love fresh sardines which are by the way quite an affordable our local catch. Then again, on the days I really can't push myself to marketing? Canned sardines. Sure enough. They are usually included as part and parcel of my provision buying. At least two cans are bought and stored in my pantry and these are, definitely the handy ingredients when, like I have told you, I have no time for marketing. Various dishes trust me, can be converted out of canned sardines. Including this Sardine Peratal (Tempoyak Masak Lemak Sardine & Sardine Masak Lemak Cili Padi). Even  Nadan Meen Curry is the produce out of canned sardine mind you. Alright, let's get down to the business of cooking Sardine Peratal. Nothing out of this world, yet, truly satisfying to our hunger. The minimalist when we speak about the ingredients and of course, easily and effortlessly put together dish.

Murungai Keerai Poriyal

Murungai Keerai/Moringa leaves. Obviously. Harvested from murungai/moringa tree and my supply of murungai keerai? The tree outside my house. Yep. Tree which grows by itself without fertilizer, neither any tender, loving care. Except of course, you gotto water during hot weather for keeping it alive. Otherwise. All will be fine and good and within time, not only the leaves will be showing up, you will also be noticing drumstick/murangai sticks/fruits (Drumstick Sambar/Dhal Curry). Murungai/Moringa! Been our Indian from ancient years wellness (Vazha Koombu Thoran). An open secret definitely amongst us and these days, mind you, even the Chinese. They are not leaving murungai/moringa alone. What are they doing by the way? Seeds of moringa sticks dried and powdered and being marketed for, obviously wellness again. Smart idea of theirs or the lost for us Indians who never considered doing the same? Still or not still, trust me, nothing like a dish out of the leaves or sticks (Meen Muringakka Kulambu). Take this Murungai Keerai Poriyal as an example. Nothing much actually. Just a couple of ingredients and Murungai Keerai Poriyal, believe me you, will be so best appetizing and a pride delight side dish for your rice meal.  For a vegetarian version, do I have to say? Say no to dried shrimps. What can you pair Murungai Keerai Poriyal alongside? Sambar, Rasam, Sodhi or as you like or wish (Mor Kuzhambu).

Tomato Rasam/Thakkali Rasam

Rasam! Much have been spoken about before and much much I have also personally said about Rasam (Pepper Garlic Rasam). Rasam (Garlic Tomato Rasam). Of course. I vouch is our magical soup and one which is like a customary must have at least once a week. In fact, these days, I actually make in bulk. In other words, I make a bigger portion of rasam (Pineapple Rasam) and then, I separate into smaller portions for freezing. Time saving indeed. Rasam by the way can be kept outside because? Are we not talking about spices and our pantry friendly ingredients for rasam? We are actually (Egg Rasam). But somehow, call it my habit, I still somehow feel storing rasam in the fridge is a save bet. Of like I already told you, into individual containers and freeze. Tomato Rasam. Tomato naturally is one of the ingredients, but this my version of Tomato Rasam? The traditional (Home Rasam Podi Rasam). The handed down recipe. Grandma to mum and to me of course (Nandu/Crab Rasam). Though a tiny bit of pounding is involved, otherwise, all will be tasty, delicious and more importantly, appetizing for this Nava K's Tomato Rasam. Oh, in case you would like to try the instant version to an instant rasam (Instant Rasam), I'm attaching the video as well.

Kaalan Puli Kulambu

Kaalan Puli Kulambu. Kaalan = mushroom. Puli = sour/sourness. Kulambu/Kuzhambu = curry. Easy explanation right? Kaalan Puli Kulambu or our Indian style mushroom sour curry and a vegetarian version as well. Mushrooms? They are quite a food pride in my house. We love mushrooms (Mushroom Rolls) and amongst the various types, somehow, we have a food love tendency for oyster mushroom which is really affordable. In fact, a packet of oyster mushrooms will only cost you a couple of dollars. Of course, you can use any other mushroom or even mushrooms in can (Creamy Mushroom Soup) too, but personally, I don't think I will or can suggest Shiitake mushroom. Why? Tried before and the taste does not jive and dance well pretty much in Indian sour curries.

Sardine Sambal

Sardine Sambal or Sambal Sardine. Both the same anyway. Its just a matter of whether you want to put sardine in front of sambal or sambal in front of sardine. Sardine Sambal. In fact, for a matter of fact, I really have lost count on the number of times I have already made (Sardine Varuval) and I know there will never be a full-stop. What is Sardine Sambal? Our Malaysian spicy side dish which is like the best food wonder when eaten alongside rice and you must, potentially, include Rasam (Pineapple Rasam), Sodhi (Malu Kirata) and Sambar (Udupi Sambar). Shall we grab the recipe now? Me unveiling my version of Sardine Sambal and you giving it a go? You should. Pretty much a simplicity in cooking, the easiest version by far and you just need a couple of our pantry friendly ingredients. Put your trust in this recipe of mine and? You will not be disappointed in any which way.
