Vegetarian Asam Pedas (Asam Pedas Sayur)

Masakan sayur-sayuran. Sayur sahaja. Betul tu. Apa sebabnya? Mungkin kerana kesihatan kut? Mungkin. Atau sebab-sebab peribadi mereka sendiri? Biar lah. Saya pun bukan-nya suka jaga tepi kain orang pun.

(Note: for those of you who can't read Bahasa Malaysia, please refer to the video attached right at the bottom for the recipe)

Bunga Kantan/Ginger Torch Bud Pineapple Cucumber Salad

I love all things Malaysian herbs and spices. Must I also mention that I am a typical Malaysian who will never ever compromise our Malaysian food (Mutton Rendang, Nasi Kerabu & Nasi Ulam) for anything else in this world? Our Malaysian cuisine? They are such a tremendous delight and on the whole, when we speak about our Malaysian salad? Generally, in the family of Malay salads. How can we go wrong? We can't in fact. Our Malaysian raw salad (Kerabu Taugeh, Kerabu Kacang Botol & Kerabu Mangga) is so easy to put together. In fact for a fact, most raw salads (Vegetable Raita, Asian Watermelon Salad, Mango Cucumber Salad, Apple Cucumber Salad & Cucumber Yogurt Salad). Bunga Kantan/Ginger Torch Bud Pineapple Cucumber Salad? The central master key for the scent and aroma is obviously, bunga kantan (ginger torch bud) which I am still struggling in growing. Just can't get right no matter what so far. Nevermind, we can still buy? A dollar most probably for one. Making this salad? Ingredients listed below, but no hard and soft rules to the amount of ingredients. As little or as much as you like. Bunga Kantan/Ginger Torch Bud Pineapple Cucumber Salad? Crunchiness, tadbit of spiciness, tanginess and wondrous aroma of ginger torch bud.

Ikan Goreng Asam

The other side to the previous Ikan Goreng Kunyit/Turmeric Fried Fish. The other side which is my favourite as well. Speak about sourness, me, myself and I? Honestly, I so love sourness to every bit. Any kinda sourness in our Malaysian dishes (Nyonya Acar Fish, Asam Curry Fish & Fried Kembung With Assam Sauce). Sourness from our local fruits (Sambal Belimbing Bilis & Masak Lemak Nenas) and of course, lime or asam jawa/tamarind are the other two for streaming into curries or our sambal dishes (Tamarind Prawn Curry, Ayam Masak Tiga Rasa, Sambal Udang PetaiAsam Pedas Ikan), or maybe I should include vinegar as well. For this Ikan Goreng Asam, its tamarind. Tamarind juice and salt as the marination for fish, followed by fish being fried and of course, we need a dip right? Dip which must be spicy, salty and along a touch of sweetness? Potentially (Fried Fish with Soy Sauce, Ikan Masak Kicap & Crispy Chilli Fish). Ikan Goreng Asam? Sourness is definitely our Malaysian food appreciation.

Terong Balado Pedas Manis

Terong Balado Pedas Manis is? Fried Brinjal in Spicy Sweet Sambal/Sauce. Says it all right? I am back to my Indonesian cooking and back again to eggplant, aubergine or brinjal? Admittedly. My previous balado cooking lingo (Ikan Balado) and other Indonesian dishes (Sate Kambing, Indonesian Grilled Fish, Sambal Goreng Teri & Sambal Terasi)? Plus, we did speak to a certain extent about terong? The bright purple sparkled fruit or veggie or said as warna ungu in Indonesian language and even in our Malay language?  A popularity in fact. Terong being a take for any cuisine around the world for the matter (Thai Style Eggplant). We too quite fancy terong (Japanese Eggplant Saute). Perhaps why I have already rolled out a couple of dishes and whatever said, brinjal in sambal must be one of the food prides. I don't know about my other half-half, most probably for him will still be Indian style to brinjal (Bengali Begun Bhaja, Baingan Bharta, Eggplant Tikka & Brinjal Stir Fry) but me myself can't be separated from sambal (Sambal Belimbing Bilis & Kacang Buncis Belacan). Terong Balado Pedas Manis? The modern twist or a modified version and according to Malaysian ingredients for a satisfying and fabulously exquisite Terong Belado Pedas Manis.

Mee Siam Kuah/Gravy (Vegetarian)

Anything is possible these days. Of course. I'm not in denial by the way that anything can be a matter even for food intake. In fact, considering that many are jumping into the back wagon of being a vegetarian, only god knows why, Indians on the whole we shouldn't speak about, there are many possibilities to a vegetarian meal these days. What about me, are you asking? Neh! Never have I thought of being a full blown vegetarian (Maggi Goreng Mamak & Mee Rebus Vegetarian). Of course every now and then, in fact every once a week, I am in the making. The making of a vegetarian meal (Chinese Vegetarian Noodle Soup & Mee Rojak Vegetarian) for my other half-half, and me, I can basically go with the flow. Out came this Mee Siam Kuah/Gravy Vegetarian on this particular Saturday from my kitchen and to our dining table. Mee Siam? I have already spoken about before (Nyonya Mee Siam, Singapore Mee Siam & Mee Siam)? I did. Mee Siam Vegetarian? Nothing is short coming or going. Still a delightful and really slurpy delicious, complete wholesome meal. Oh, for those of you who are anti-egg vegetarian, ditch egg aside and Mee Siam I think must have originated from Thailand? I don't know. You tell me please (Thapthim Krop, Tom Yum Noodle Soup & Siamese Laksa Lemak).

Tom Yum Noodle Soup

So, its back to Tom Yum again? Obviously. Though we did actually have a break from tom yum for like three months and then out came this latest version. But rather a different food calling actually due to its noodles in tom yum soup and which by far I have not made before. Perhaps the closest is Tom Yam Fried Mee Hoon or maybe I should also include Siamese Laksa Lemak. Nevertheless, what can be outstanding or unique for tom yum (Vegan Tom Yum Soup, Tom Yum Goong, Tom Kha Gai & Seafood Tom Yum Soup)? The pride and pleasure must be the various types of herbs, primarily kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass, and let's not never forget about chillies, plus I love fish sauce into tom yam or Thai dishes on the whole. Tom Yum Noodle Soup as you have already noted is not far behind in terms of some of the ingredients and it is also a tremendously sumptuous, fulfilling and power lashing noodle dish (Thai Tomato Soup, Shrimp Pad Thai Salad, Thai Fish Noodle Soup, Tom Yum Fried RiceSpicy Thai Noodles).

Fried Prawn Wanton

Fried Prawn Wanton. My-My! Such a fab kinda crunch and munch right? I know. Fried stuffs especially on the whole? You tell me. In fact, when these wanton skin parcel filled with prawns came out from my wok, a few actually went missing immediately. Not anywhere far, but our tummy tucking actually. By themselves, or when dipped into chilli sauce prior to having a ball of a time and as many as we want till all the fried prawn wanton are over and done, perhaps within a short while, what a delight. How do we make these prawn wantons? I think I have already alerted you. In fact in my previous recipes as well (Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup & Chicken Wanton Soup) and this latest variety is sort of the cousin of the previous Fried Shrimp Wanton. Only that, the tedious thing for me when prawns are a concern (Mee Goreng Udang, Hokkien Hae MeeMongolian Prawns, Goan Prawn Curry, Butter Prawns & Prawn Coconut Milk)? The peeling and cleaning, especially the time taken pulling out the veins. Otherwise, all is fine with prawns though I must say we are not the biggest fans of prawns (Sichuan Prawns & Chinese Prawn Fritters). Of course, there is always the once a while and these Fried Prawn Wanton, trust me, are super yummy, super crunchy and super beautifully plated up.

Vegan Tom Yum Soup

Thai cuisine or even tom yam/tom yum for the matter. A big Thai matter actually for me. You name it, I have it (Thai Fried Chicken, Thai Steamed Fish, Thai Crispy Fish & Shrimp Pad Thai Salad) and tom yum by itself has been a good and great making exploration on the whole. Basically, because we simply love slurping into tom yum soups or other Thai conclusive soups. Just so satisfying to our palates mind you, especially for their big, profound and utterly magical spicy, tangy and aromatic tastes (Thai Tomato Soup, Tom Yam Goong, Tom Kha GaiThai Carrot Soup & Thai Fish Noodle Soup). Today, ladies and gentlemen, its Vegan Tom Yum Soup. In fact, can be regarded as a vegetarian version as well. Make the broth and then go ahead by adding the rest of the ingredients as listed for a sincerely appreciated Vegan Tom Yum Soup (Tom Yam Fried Rice, Tom Yam Chicken & Tom Yam Mee Hoon).

Kerabu Taugeh

Kerabu? Remember those kerabu or Malaysian raw salads I have already shared with all you guys (Kerabu Kacang Botol, Kerabu Mangga & Kerabu Kaki Ayam)? Plus of course, the rest from this and that part of Asian Continent (Cambodian Green Mango SaladSri Lankan Carrot Salad & Asian Watermelon Salad) and me, the Indian who just so love our ulam, local herbs and Malaysian local produce for my cooking and eating pleasure (Nasi Ulam, Kacang Buncis Cili, Sambal Belimbing, Gado Gado & Nasi Dagang)? Tell me please and I will return willingly tell you on this Kerabu Taugeh, aka, Bean Sprouts Salad. Obviously, point blank said, you need beansprouts which you just need to break the brown bottom of them and then, if you asking me, just buy the kerisik (pan fried and pounded grated coconut). What's next? Quickly blanch bean sprouts (Bean Sprouts Omelette & Bean Sprouts Salted Fish) and tossed alongside kerisik, shallots, red chillies, coriander leaves, spring onion, lime juice, sugar and salt. Refreshing, crunchy, spicy, tangy and aromatic Kerabu Taugeh/Bean Sprouts Salad is ready. Go ahead everyone. Devour in.

Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup

Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup made in my Malaysian kitchen. Why not (Hong Kong Steamed Fish)? Who told you, you can't make Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup in your Malaysian kitchen? Not me. I in fact have already proven it. This is the Hong Kong Wonton Noodle Soup as per our Malaysian locality and pretty much, tell me please. How different can our local Wonton Noodle Soup be compared to those made in Hong Kong? Pretty much more or less the same ingredients, but considering that Halal food is quite a demand in Malaysia, I made this prawn halal version (Mee Goreng Udang/Prawn Fried Mee, Hokkien Hae Mee, Cantonese Yee Mee & Hakka Noodles). The start to making of course must be making the wonton dumplings and if prawn (Prawn Coconut Milk, Prawn CocktailChinese Prawn Fritters) is not favorable to you, please proceed with chicken (Chicken Wonton Soup & Chinese Chicken Meatball Soup) or pork to be filled and wrapped in store bought wanton skin and these wanton parcels can be crispy fried (Fried Shrimp Wonton) as well. The next course of action for wonton (Sichuan Chilli Prawns)? Into the soup and alongside the soup ladled into the bowl of wonton noodles and kai lan, garnished with spring onion, and teamed with green chillies soy sauce (Chinese Vegetable Noodle Soup).

Maggi Goreng Mamak

Maggi Goreng Mamak. The number fried noodle selling. In fact, each time we head to the mamak stalls, its like a habit or food lingo we must call for a plate of Maggi Goreng Mamak. My knees too can wobble for this style. Quickly fried on the spot, there and then noodles (Mee Goreng Udang, Char Kway Teow, Anchovies Fried Mee Hoon & Malaysian Fried Mee). Maybe not always, yet, I do yearn for and I usually request for lotsa veggies in Maggi Goreng Mamak. Can be a satisfying mind you even when we make it in our kitchen and of course, without compromising on cleanliness and according to our taste (Nyonya Mee Siam, Malaysian Fried Mee Hoon & Hokkien Mee). Whichever and whatever ingredients we prefer, regardless, the essentials have to be Maggi instant noodle or noodles, chillies, soy sauce, and like I have already told you, throwing in lotsa vegetables.

Kacang Buncis Goreng Belacan (French Beans With Shrimp Paste)

Goreng-Goreng and our Malaysian goreng. Our goreng, especially if its a Malay style goreng must be a belacan goreng. What is belacan by the way (Sambal Belimbing Ikan BilisSambal Terasi, Belacan Fried Rice & Sambal Belacan Ikan)? Belacan is definitely an ingredient seller for me. In other words, I so love belacan which can be overwhelming for some people. I really can't understand or don't know why these people cannot digest the smell of belacan, but myself? No problem. Belacan naturally will kick in when added into our Malaysian savory dishes or for the matter, when you stir fry vegetables (Sweet Potato Leaves Belacan & Kangkung Belacan). Also, when we speak about stir frying on the whole primarily, its about quickly frying in a jiffy (Mee Goreng Udang). Similarly, that's how we do it for Kacang Buncis Goreng Belacan (Kacang Buncis Tempeh Goreng). French beans, bilis/anchovies, home made belacan chili paste and of course, lime juice and a tiny bit of Gula Melaka for the spectacular savoury Malaysian tastes (Kerabu Kacang Botol, Sayur Lodeh & Taugeh Ikan Masin) in Kacang Buncis Goreng Belacan.

Bengali Begun Bhaja

Frying and crispiness and all things mouth nice by immediately tucking into whichever fried dish for the matter. Tell me about it? Fried stuffs. Oh-my! Definitely like an immediate pop up in our mouth and Bengali Begun Bhaja, which is sliced brinjal slices (Baingan Bharta, Japanese Eggplant SauteEggplant Tikka Masala & Brinjal Stir Fry) coated or dipped in a masala batter and fried should not at all be discounted. Deliciousness mind you. In fact utter delicious crispiness and soft melt inside and the marvelous aroma of spices. Obviously, as the name of this fried brinjal has indicated, Bengali Begun Bhaja is part and parcel of Bengali cuisine I quite know it as well (Bengali Fish Curry). Plus, I must quote other recipes too (Sukhi Aloo SabziPunjabi Sabut Moong Dal, Aam ki Achaar, Tamatar ki Chutney, Shahi Gobi & Tari Wale Aloo). Therefore? God! I don't know when else to say except please tuck into Bengali Begun Bhaja (Cauliflower Fritters & Kurkuri Bhindi).

Red Garden Food Paradise - Leith Street, George Town (Penang)

Returning back to Eastern & Oriental Hotel, I, trust me, I was still fuming. How can I possibly not be? Remember, I told you about my spa disaster in Deluxcious spa? My anger thermometer almost raptured, I just couldn't keep my big fat mouth shut. I had spill all of it to my other half-half, who was still dazed after his sleeping beauty sleep. He in return just smiled, what else can he do anyway, later, we got down to deciding where dinner should be (Coffee Lane Cafe). Restaurants, classy expensive eateries? Neh. What for? We thought we might as well walk the streets, and if we find something, we will decide there and then. And, so we walk, a long walk actually. All the way from the hotel, while looking out for eateries, eventually, once we noticed Red Garden's signboard, we had to decide. How about dinner in this hawker paradise? Sure. I was in for it. Grabbing a table beforehand, once we took a good turnaround, we realise that Red Garden Food Paradise is akin an international food court. Row by row hawker stalls, featuring all sorts of food, all sorts mind you. Not only local cuisines, you name it, Japanese,Thai, Korean, Western and what not. Quite a huge choice, indeed, thrown in with free entertainment from the three piece band.

Coffee Lane Cafe - Georgetown (Penang)

An impromptu visit to Penang, don't ask me why, what and how. Please don't. Its a long story I don't want to dwell upon. Gonna be rather complicated, I am sure won't make sense to you as well. So, skip, lets skip the reason to Penang, let me speak on this dining experience in Coffee Lane Cafe. Accompanied by my cousin, he, in fact is the one who suggested Coffee Lane Cafe he has visited, maybe, lets say two or three times. I of course was extremely keen, why not? Sounded like my kind of food love, we parked, oh god, parking is quite a thing in Georgetown. Blame it on the usual hustle and bustle, rapid development and Georgetown by itself is a major tourism parade and paradise. We managed, we parked, not really close, within a 5 minutes walking distance, prior to crossing the junction for the entry to Coffee Lane Cafe.

Mixed Vegetable Soup

And so like they say, if you really can't conclude what to cook for the day (Moroccan Pea Soup, Kashmiri Vegetable SoupKenchin Jiru/Japanese Vegetable Soup, Moo Gook/Korean Radish Soup & Caldo Verde/Portuguese Potato Soup) and you also want to clear your fridge, plus the weather is chilling your bones, what else can be a new story in our kitchen? Wouldn't you agree it should potentially be a soup story? A soup as well (Thai Tomato SoupVegetarian Mulligatawny Soup & Chinese Tofu Soup), for also, like I have already said, for saving all the vegetables in the fridge before they permanently bid bye-bye? Such a waste right? Throwing away ingredients? As if you are throwing away money as well? Of course (Old Cucumber Soup, Burdock Root Soup, Winter Melon Soup & Turmeric Tomato Soup). Moreover, there's no leaps and bounds for a soup. By far, anything goes? Literally whatever, like for this Mixed Vegetable Soup. Of course, we must have aroma and scent for an Indian soup and we can't run far away from spices. All about worthiness. The worthiness of slurping or drenching Mixed Vegetable Soup over rice prior to finger and hand tucking in. I mean, nothing like our fingers leading the way when its an Indian soup in rice instead of soup being a starter (Pumpkin Soup, Creamy Mushroom Soup & Onion Soup). Oh, before I forget, vegetable stock and butter does mountain heaps of luxurious goodness in Mixed Vegetable Soup.

Mee Goreng Udang

Mee Goreng Udang, or prawn fried mee. The frying technic which by far is not a brain cracker, but when we speak about frying noodles on the whole, we must have all the ingredients on stand by and as close to us possibly. Otherwise? We may end up over-cooking the ingredients we have already put in the big wok and then, it can turn out to be a disaster or we ending up stressing ourselves, and let's not forget about sweating when frying. Of course. Ask me about sweating and I can go on and on (Malaysian Style Fried Mee Hoon, Hakka Noodles, Chow Mein & Hokkien Mee & Char Kway Teow). That's about it I think the cooking tips for Mee Goreng Udang which is definitely another one of our Malaysian food show stealer. Noodles fried alongside prawns (Hokkien Hae Mee, Shrimp Pad Thai & Shrimp Pho), cabbage, eggs, garlic, spring onion and soy sauce (Nyonya Mee Siam, Malaysian Sour Spicy Fish Soup Noodles, Mee Rebus, Laksam Kelantan & Malaysian Fried Mee).

Udupi Sambar

Sambar again? Indeed. Sambar again obviously. What's with sambar/Indian dal curry and my cooking story (Punjabi Sabut Moong Dal, Andra Sambar & Palakura Pappu)? In fact, its a story which will walk you down the memory lane, up the valley, down the hill and, back and forth, bouncing you in and out of my house and kitchen. Potentially. Until I am lost for words on what else should I say about sambar and most probably, its a similar Indian curry story in each and every Indian household (Drumstick Sambar, Mysore Sambar & Bitter Gourd Sambar). But due to making sambar as regularity as I have, I now had drawn a line between myself and sambar. Regardless, sambar making is still on the go and I don't think will stop until I receive the red light from my other half-half. Hopefully because I can't really and seriously digest sambar anymore (Fish Sambar, Tanni Saar, Sambar & Spinach Sambar). Where did the idea fall from for making Udupi Sambar? Just like that from the sky. I just plucked the name of this sambar and made my version. Udupi Sambar I bet will be a major explosive dal showcased Indian curry for all you sambar lovers (Mulligatawny Soup & Dhal Rice).

Sukhi Aloo Sabzi

Potatoes! Tell me please? The kilos and kilos we buy most probably every week and any dish for the matter made from potatoes I think will be a total sell-out the moment it hits our dining table? If you are asking me, oh-yes. We just so love potatoes any which way they are cooked (Tari Wale Aloo/Vegan Potato Curry), plus I can go on and on and quote a whole string and list of potato dishes I have already shared with all of you, but off hand, these are the few I thought I will link (Fried Potato Balls, Dum Aloo, Chilli Aloo & Aloo Gobi) for the benefit of staying within the context of vegetarian dishes. What is Sukhi Aloo Sabzi by the way (Kashmiri Vegetable SoupTamatar ki Chutney, Aam ka Achaar, Shahi Gobi Baingan Bharta)? Obviously, a North Indian dry style potato dish which requires boiled potatoes stir fried alongside the ingredients listed below and my style is perhaps different. Usually I think green peas are not one of the ingredients? I on the other hand decided I will because, to each our own preferable ingredients instead of like blind leading the blind? Of course. Sukhi Aloo Sabzi? Your vegetarian and vegan side dish for a rice meal (Tomato Rice Pilaf & Hyderabadi Briyani) or how about tucking in alongside bread, chapati or tosa (Punjabi Sabut Moong Dal & Navratan Korma)?

Asian Egg Mayonnaise Sandwiches

Sometimes, or maybe even every now and then, we should ditch our regular meals aside for a simply put together home style sandwiches. I however, honestly and sincerely, am not at all a bread person (Tomato Rice Pilaf). And despite me having had tried really hard, I somehow still can't swallow any, whichever type of bread made. Usually, a bread meal is prepared for my other half-half, which in return must be interpreted as, he and bread are best friends (Tuna BurgersMushroom Veggie Burger & Lamb Burgers). Then again, since I am not a fussy eater and when I am hungry anything goes, and when I have to prepare a meal after a tiring working day, let it even be bread. Furthermore, can you imagine how much of time I have to spent in the kitchen if I have to prepare a bread meal for my other half-half, followed by a meal for myself (Dried Shrimp Sambal SandwichFish Sandwich & Vegetarian Sandwich)?

Vegetarian Delight: Indulge in Coconut Creamed Spinach

There's a common saying that inner beauty outweighs outer beauty. Yet, when faced with hole-ridden spinach, doubts arise ( Spinach Lenti...
