Wakon Japanese Restaurant - Damansara Utama

Two years and steadfastly growing, you can't miss the bold signboard of Wakon Japanese Restaurant (non-halal) just across the main road of Damansara Utama or within the Damansara Uptown area. The pride and joy of the humble and down of earth Chef Sundy Chim who has belted years of expertise in the F & B industry in Hong Kong, Wakon is the reflection of chef’s love for Japanese cuisine. Also, for the love of the laid back and relaxed Malaysian environment, chef decided to move his restaurant to Malaysia.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a simple and comfortable Japanese Izakaya-style interior. Living up to the innovative spirit while keeping the Japanese tradition close to the heart, the simple imaginative menu in this Izakaya restaurant mainly consists of grilled dishes such as Pork Neck Skewers, BBQ Squid, BBQ Chicken Wings and many more. Moreover, Wakon offers ala carte menu such as rice options, ramen and their signature such as Black Truffle Mixed with Udon. For the best customer experience, Wakon is determine in serving quality dishes and triple yes, you sure can expect to savour some Sake over your meal.

For me, the equally tastefully set up slightly dimmed private dining area lined with Sake bottles where I was seated was the comfort and adoration. Honestly, it just enlivened my day. On the other hand, Japanese food I am familiar with but still I as usual excitedly looked forward to the dishes we are going to sample as one big happy family. Only that, the urge for some sake while dining unfortunately I held back as I was on medication. So, it had to be the free flow of Green Tea followed by a chilled Aloe Vera drink for the natural goodness.

During this dining experience, the Crab Roe Salada (RM13.90) spelt out a good start for our meal. Subtle yet a favorable combination of fresh and delicately sliced zucchini with strips of crab surimi and Japanese dressing, I was so close to finishing off the whole portion.
Then again, with the arrival of the beautifully made, resembling like dumplings Hokkaido Style Wasabi Gyoza (RM14.90) and crowned with just the right amount of wasabi sauce, I happily tucked into its softness and mild heat dimension.
The next two dishes - BBQ Pork Belly (RM6.90) and BBQ Pork Neck Meat (RM7.90) were definitely the winners I couldn't stop praising. The boneless and juicy cut of fatty pork belly threaded in skewer was a joyous delight whereas the sinfully brimming pork neck with a lovely charred outer layer and tender juicy meat trended closely behind.

Arriving thereafter was the BBQ Brinjal (RM9.90) – dainty pieces of grilled brinjal over a tiny bed of jullenned radish for the subtle hint of tastes and the melt-in-the mouth texture. Brinjals whichever way they are cooked has always been my favourite and these pieces certainly didn’t fail.
Another personal favourite was the BBQ Squid (RM18.90). It didn’t take long to see why it is a must as the sizable squid was perfectly cooked inside and complemented with the salty bubbles/fish roe and chilli flakes atop.
The Mentaiko Chicken Wings (RM12.90 – 1 set 2 pcs) generously tucked with salted cod roe were pretty tasty but as I have planned to pace myself, a piece was the satisfaction before receiving the Black Truffle Mixed Handmade Udon (RM46.90), Tonkatsu Udon (RM8.50) and Tomato Udon (RM8.50). Though udon, sorry to say has never been my favorite, I actually enjoyed the udon tossed with a musty-sweet truffle paste and more of the fish roe that cooperated well together.
Between the other two soupy udon dishes, I couldn't stop slurping the tomato-based tangy broth compared to just a bit of the rich creamy pork broth and the chewy-soft and thick wheat noodles.

A truly pleasurable-authentic Japanese Izakaya experience despite worth the wait for the heart winning grilled dishes, do drop by at Wakon Japanese Restaurant to have a drink or two while you enjoy some of their light bites.
