Chiang Rai (Thailand)

One of the things I struggle with in a packaged tour is waking up before dawn. Not easy because I have been accustomed to staying up late working for myself and I don't see a reason for waking up early unless for valid reasons. However, I suppose for a short 3 nights 4 days vacation like this one (Chiang Mai 1 Chiang Mai 2), it wasn't all that exhausting compared to the 9 days Turkey tour especially up by 4am for the Hot Air Balloon Ride in Cappadocia, Turkey. So, here at Holiday Villa, I was ready by 8.30am for the approximately 3 hours’drive to Wat Rong Khun, also known as White Temple, the current number one tourist attraction.

Unlike other rustic, colorful or golden Wats/temples I have visited in Thailand (Wat Mahathat Ayutthaya), White Temple is a contemporary unconventional Buddhist and Hindu temple that sparkles in the sun with its white color and for the use of glass pieces in the plaster. Designed by National Artist Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, sure enough, with the sun beaming high in the sky, the temple majestically shined through. But since the temple was still under construction, only so much of the interior I saw from the bridge leading to the main entrance.

Thereafter, we wandered around the surrounding to see the detailed sculptures of serpents, demons, skulls, severed heads along with an area filled with arms and hands reaching out from what can only be thought of as some form of torment in the ground, the art gallery and the golden toilet I would have missed if not for answering nature's call. The most luxurious gold colored extremely opulent building,  the toilet is definitely a state of art with its intrinsic thought-provoking design.

Across the temple, as with most tourist sights in Thailand, there are a good number of food vendors, cafe and souvenir shops. Grabbing a drink, we rested for a while before the short drive to one of the restaurants at the border of Chiang Mai for the usual-normal nothing special Thai-Chinese lunch.

The next brief stop after lunching was at Mae Khachan Hot Spring for relaxation, for soaking our feet and hands in the spring which makes its way through the lovely garden, the little trill-frill of boiling eggs or you can also opt for fish spa and again, the never short of souvenirs shops and restaurants in Thailand (Solo Trip To Bangkok & Phuket Premium Outlet).

For the next few hours, as suggested by the tour guide just a day earlier, we detoured the itinerary for a trip to Myanmar across the border of Mae Sai  - stay tuned peeps!!
