Okonomi - (Solaris Dutamas) Jalan Dutamas, Publika

Believe me you, I've never been to Publika. Strange and weird right? Well, presumably its the comfort within Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and close-by areas why I am alien to the upbeat-happening Publika. Then again, nothing venture nothing gained is my philosophy as well. If not for this food review, perhaps I wouldn't even have bothered to take the long drive.

Asking for directions can be embarrassing too these days. "Aiyo, use waze lah" the instant reply. Okay. I get the picture and I also get the picture that the "built-in GPS"  in my car must be put to good use. Anyway waze or waste not any time, hurriedly I arrived at Solaris. But where is Okonomi?? Instead of asking any Tom, Dick and Harry or Elizabeth, Jane and Mary, I walked into the police station. Of course the police man must help, Otherwise gone with the wind the reputation!!

From the police station, nava-k walked again across to the other block. Happiness indeed to see the signboard of Okonomi and salivating upon seeing the display of ice-creams at the entrance. Obviously not possible to grab and start polishing the ice cream because greeting everyone as always is the etiquette before dining.
Cozy and classy and with its black and white colour theme, Okonomi offers a relaxed atmosphere. A couple of tables to sit outside or for a quiet moment with your loved ones, sitting inside is comforting.

Okonomi I must tell you is a special Japanese restaurant. It is here I truly and sincerely loved customising the sushi rolls in a group of three. But if sushi is not your cup of tea, opt between the 40 different fillings, 20 different sauces and dressing and 16 different toppings to customise your own maki rolls or settle for the house rolls created by the chef. Moreover, a wonder meal in Okonomi can begin with the salads, rice and pasta while sipping the drinks and end with the desserts. During this food review, a pleasure it was to taste these dishes.

Mango Prawn Salad – RM20.90
Succulent prawns, mangoes and Japanese cucumber topped with tobiko & a mango salad dressing served over mixed greens & cherry tomatoes.
Caeser Salad Roll – RM19.90
Uramai, soy wrap, white rice, chicken karaage, crispy coral lettuce, boiled egg, croutons, grated parmesan cheese & cheddar mayo.
Crunchy Crab – RM26.90
Uramaki, seaweed, white rice, Hokkaido crab meat, soft shell crab, carrot, tempura crunch, togarashi & cheddar salad dressing.
Ebi Fry (5 pieces) – RM15.90
Deep fried succulent breaded prawns.
Tempura Squid – RM25.90
Tempura battered deep fried crispy squid slices.
Unagi Pasta – RM32.90
Fresh grilled unagi served with a teriyaki glaze.
Chicken Gratin – RM18.90
Generous portion of juicy chicken & mixed mushrooms in rich cream sauce.
Prawn Kakiage – RM18.90
Deep fried tempura battered prawns with a teriyaki glaze, carrots and onions garnished with spring onions.
Matcha Lava Cake – RM18.90
A rich matcha cake filled with delicious matcha chocolate molten lava, drizzled with powdered sugar and served with vanilla ice cream, matcha chocolate sticks & fresh strawberries. 15 minutes preparation time.
The mango salad is my kind of food. I triple loved the sweet sour burst of the dressing and the freshness of the veggies, mango and prawns. The caeser salad roll and crunchy crab must be applauded since I love rice and these rice based rolls didn't let me down. The fried stuffs (ebi fry, tempura squid and prawn kakiage) simply said, just spot-on for the crunch and munch explosion. The unnagi pasta and chicken gratin I hardly touched but as visually appealing, raved by fellow bloggers as the wholesome filling meal. The vegetarian sushi rolls with honey mustard sauce we invented to showcase that Okonomi is not only for pork free customers. Likewise vegetarians are their customers too.
Whether you tuck into these dishes or others as per your choice, not to be missed are the matcha based drinks or desserts - hot matcha, chilled matcha with azuki beans, cream and mochi, matcha with cream and caramel, the smooth as ever Okonomi made matcha ice cream or decide after flipping through the menu. Besides the "star-seller"matcha lava cake, there's also the chocolate lava cake that volcanic out the warm chocolate when gently cut across.

Okonomi is the first and only in Malaysia where you can customise your rolls. That's why within six months in the market, Okonomi is the trend on social media. While they are getting ready to open the second outlet probably with a brand new menu (the dishes I sampled are the new dishes as well),  do make a visit to:
