Dhal Yogurt Soup

Lentils again? Yes indeed, Well, when ideas run out, the nearest as well as safest option has to be a dhal dish (Dhal/lentil vegetable soup). While this dhal yogurt soup isn't a spectacular one that will truly impress you, if you are on the lookout for a dish which can be put up easily for a basis-simple meal (Masoor Dal Carrot Soup), certainly you will love it - not too runny neither thick, a bit tangy, a bit buttery and with double dose of aroma from curry leaves and coriander leaves. Okay, can be a starter before the main course, or with lots or rice please. Dang to simplicity!

Ingredients
1 cup masoor dhal - soak to soften for 1/2 an hour and rinse.
2 tomatoes (medium size) - sliced
1 inch ginger - crushed/bruised
5 garlic -crushed/bruised
5 shallots - remove skin
2 tbsp yogurt - nicely whisk to remove lumps
2 tbsp butter (ghee or oil will do too)
2 sprigs coriander leaves
2 sprigs curry leaves
Salt for taste

Method
Sauté ginger, shallots and garlic in heated butter.
Add dhal and tomatoes.
Stir and pour in 1/2 litre of water (more water if you like).
Stir and simmer till dhal is softened.
Season with salt, add curry leaves and coriander leaves.
When soup is heated through, off the heat and combine in yogurt.

  19. May the Lord give those families of the victims strength & power to see thru this difficult period...........

That aside, it's comfort food for now. I'm always amazed with the Indians using yoghurt in their cooking. Is the yogurt same as the one we eat for desserts? Yummy!
