Nasi Lemak - Store Bought and Upgraded

There's plenty to brag about Malaysia especially the food and the friendly people. But disgusting it is with the high crime rate. I've been pick-pocketed a few times those days when I had to rely on public transport. Then driving became a must after life got better. Still whether you drive or use public transport, there's no assurance of not becoming a crime victim. I know. I'v been robbed with a parang on my neck. To start off, you must read what's been written at Mushroom and Tofu Soup.
So it was over and I escaped unharmed. But the trauma was really painful - feeling scared, couldn't sleep and afraid of going out. I coped and within a couple of months, I was back to normal before the empire struck back. My house broken into while we were at work. Seriously I don't know who. But I think must be someone who've been watching our moves or tipped off by familiar people. I can't say for sure but deep inside, perhaps the guards were hand in glove. Whatever. I count my blessings because they robbed and left before I came home. My heart sunk when I knew that the gold jewelleries, exclusive costume jewelleries and cash sapu habis/swept up. Even the Vidal Sassoon hair dryer was not spared.

Police report made and you know lah how it is? Wait for the police to dust the thumb prints but eventually case tutup/close without any outcome. Such is the sad case in the country. Each and every day, robbery is stealing the limelight. In fact,  its really frightening to hear or read about other worst robberies. I guess I was lucky. Any way  next is to install alarm despite paying for the guard service.

The day after the robbery, the mess at house had to be cleaned up as everything was pulled out and thrown everywhere. Food may be unimportant during trial and tribulation but as human beings, we have to eat right?? That's when I realised that the plain nasi lemak bungkus can be upgraded to a filling meal. Of course nothing can come close to home made Squid Nasi LemakVegetarian Nasi Lemak and Prawn Nasi Lemak. Then again, in desperate situation, we have to strive. I did. I lavished the nasi lemak with fried eggs and ikan bilis/anchovies, cucumber slices and for the opphh, sambal belacan as always became the hero. My Iphone also became the hero for taking these pictures. My heroic Canon DSLR I suspect is serving the robbers for the nude shots of their girlfriends or already been sold at the Chow Kit night market.

  3. Akila - nasi lemak is rice, cooked with coconut milk and screwpine leaves. As for the condiments, its basically open to anything but the essentials are fried anchovies, peanuts, fried or boiled eggs, cucumber slices and most importantly the sambal.

  14. Neeva, am so sorry to hear that you were robbed, thank God that you're not home, it was a terrible experience certainly. I kind of always worried about our safety every day, children are no longer free to play outside, we have to monitor them every day, all for the security reasons. Th criminals out there seems more sophisticated and daring.

I have long been not buying nasi lemak, simply reason becoz nowadays quite difficult to find nasi lemak can that satisfy my taste bud, often we had to remove the charred fried peanuts, and the sambal very sikit too...I love to eat nasi lemak with lot of sambal until the rice becomes red in color! wow now salivating already!

    you take care dear...

  22. Oh Nava, I am so glad you are unhurt! I have been to Malaysia thrice (twice for work and once on holiday) but never ever imagined it could be this dangerous. My last visit was about 5 years back...was it always like that or has crime gone up? I can imagine what you must be going through. And you are so brave and dedicated to be still posting such amazing recipes for us. You have definitely elevated the Nasi Lemak with your personal touches!
