Curried Potatoes

Everything in life is about planning. Yes everyone, we have to plan way ahead, when it comes to a meal at home, you have to plan as well. Otherwise, you will be all going in circles trying to decide what to cook while considering each of the family members. In my house, there's only two people, yet, I have a hard time on food for the day. Because both of us are rice eaters albeit we don't mind every now and then noodles (Shanghai Noodles, Instant Asam Laksa Curry Leaves Fried Mee Hoon) or one wholesome dish (Rosemary Lemon Baked Chicken, Tom Yum GoongVegetarian Mutton Rendang Nasi Lemak, Basil Dried Prawn Toast & Mushroom Soup Butter Garlic Toast).  But rice must take center stage, mainly for lunch.

So, I got to plan and decide, rice of course is included (Ghee Almond Rice), and then comes the main dish (Turmeric Tomato Soup, Serai Sayur Lodeh, Dhal Vegetable Soup, Potato Green Peas Curry & Thai Green Vegetable Curry) and sides (Pepper Basil Crab, Chilli Coriander Fish, Cauliflower Pakora & Long Beans Prawn). Safest for a side dish is anything made with potatoes (potatoes dried chillies, lemongrass chilli potatoes, potato salted fish sambalegg potato curry and potato green peas curry). This curried potatoes cooked with chilli powder, spices and curry leaves is a mouthwatering accompaniment which can't go wrong with either yoghurt rasam and murungakkai/drumstick sambar.

Ingredients
3 medium size (about 400g) potatoes - remove skin and slice thinly
1 tbsp chilli powder (or as needed)
1 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp garam masala
1 large red onion - slice thinly
5 garlic - sliced thinly
4-5 sprigs curry leaves
Spices - 1 stick cinnamon, 3 cloves and 1 star anise
1 tbsp tamarind juice
4 tbsp oil
Salt to taste

Method
Into heated oil, saute onion, garlic and spices.
Mix chilli and turmeric powder with water for a thick paste.
Add paste into the sautéed ingredients.
Continue to fry and stir over low heat till oil splits.
Put in potatoes, curry leaves, garam masala, tamarind juice and salt.
Pour enough water for gravy and to cook potatoes.
Stir and cook to soften potatoes.
Stir and dish out.

  1. Good luck with the elections!!
At least you guys in Malaysia, have a choice between good and bad guys. We in India, got no choice at all, HaHa - We will survive!!

Curried potato looks hot, very inviting and spicy looking!! Tamarind juice with potato is a brand new combination for me, never heard of and never eaten anywhere either. So this is bookmarked for me to try some time soon!! I would love to have this with plain rice and papad by the side.
