Curried Potatoes

The biggest question for the day or before going to bed the previous night - ahhh! what to cook? Then there is also what I like to eat and what will make my other half happy. So, back and forth thinking about what to cook, certain it is the safest will be a potato dish for both of us (potatoes dried chillies, lemongrass chilli potatoes, potato salted fish sambalegg potato curry and potato green peas curry). This curried potatoes cooked with chilli powder, spices and curry leaves was a lovely accompaniment with rice and you can go wrong with either yoghurt rasam and murungakkai/drumstick sambar.

Ingredients
3 medium size (about 400g) potatoes - remove skin and slice thinly
1 tbsp chilli powder (or as needed)
1 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp garam masala
1 large red onion - slice thinly
5 garlic - sliced thinly
4-5 sprigs curry leaves
Spices - 1 stick cinnamon, 3 cloves and 1 star anise
1 tbsp tamarind juice
4 tbsp oil
Salt to taste

Method
Into heated oil, saute onion, garlic and spices.
Mix chilli and turmeric powder with water for a thick paste.
Add paste into the sautéed ingredients.
Continue to fry and stir over low heat till oil splits.
Put in potatoes, curry leaves, garam masala, tamarind juice and salt.
Pour enough water for gravy and to cook potatoes.
Stir and cook to soften potatoes.
Stir and dish out.

  1. Good luck with the elections!!
At least you guys in Malaysia, have a choice between good and bad guys. We in India, got no choice at all, HaHa - We will survive!!

Curried potato looks hot, very inviting and spicy looking!! Tamarind juice with potato is a brand new combination for me, never heard of and never eaten anywhere either. So this is bookmarked for me to try some time soon!! I would love to have this with plain rice and papad by the side.
