By Daily Mail Reporter: Once it was worn by everyone, from Raquel Welch and Kelly McGillis to Diego Maradona. But the tight bubble curls left most mere mortals looking more poodle than pop star. Two decades on and - whisper it - the perm is back. But not as we knew it.
Inspired by the likes of Beyonce, Sarah Jessica Parker and the loose waves of Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester, the new perm gives a more tonged effect. 'Perming rods are the new curling tongs,' says stylist Adam Reed, while Trevor Sorbie has reported a sharp rise in requests for perms this year. 'Our new perm is less damaging to hair as we use a gentle solution, and this leads to a much more natural-looking result.'
HOW TO WEAR THE NEW PERM
The corkscrew - spotted on the autumn/winter catwalks for Jean Paul Gaultier and Chanel, far left. Go for a short bob or messy Eighties up-do.
The relaxed spiral - think Beyonce's bouncy curls, above left, or SJP's laid-back tresses.
The wave - tousled or set, like model Jasmine Guinness or Holly Willoughby, it's the least curly but still looks very sexy.
