Bardot's shorts inch back up

Luke Salkeld writes: Inspired by the classic look of the likes of Brigitte Bardot, pictured below, and Raquel Welch, women are embracing a fashion revival that leaves little to the imagination. Industry sources claim the items are now not limited to holiday use, despite an average downwards length of less than four inches from the waist-line. As displayed in recent weeks with varying degrees of success by modern celebrities including Pamela Anderson and Cameron Diaz, they can be matched with a smart jacket, or a cardigan.

Ladieswear buyer at Peacocks, Antonella Bettley, explained: ‘Today’s girls know what they want, and when they fancy wearing shorts they like to wear them short. ‘This season’s skimpiest are as tiny as a pair of big knickers and just as revealing. Shorts are now seen as a classic summer staple, and worn as everyday fashion as opposed to being reserved for holidays only. Women are just as inclined to wear their summer shorts to the office, or to do to their weekly shop as they are to wear with a bikini on the beach. This season we are seeing shorts challenge the skirt, with our customers teeming shorts with a blazer and sandals to summer parties and festivals.’
‘This season has marked a big return to fifties style, with women taking a style lead from icons including Bridget Bardot and Raquel Welch, and we’re seeing customers re-creating the classic looks of this decade. We’re excited to be carrying this look forward to next season, with the launch of our first collection of shorts for Autumn which customers can team with fun fashion tights and a bright knitted jumper once the winter temperatures set in,' she added.
