Restaurant Super Kitchen Chilli Pan Mee, SS2

Malaysians sure love their chillies – which explains the popularity of chilli pan mee (flat noodles). Restaurant Super Kitchen has grown and now there are now five outlets (three in Selangor and two in KL).My first encounter with chilli pan mee was at their KL branch (off Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman) and yes, the chilli numbed all taste sensation for a while. You sweat. You get a little teary-eyed. You struggle to finish the meal through the spiciness. And yet, you return for more!
It was good news when I heard that they have outlets in Kota Damansara, Taipan Subang and SS2 in PJ. It was with much anticipation as it had been awhile since the last taste of chilli pan mee. A look at the little container of dried chilli brought back good memories of the pending good meal.
This time around, I held back from adding a big heap of chilli for fear that the tummy is not able to take all that “fire”. Alas, it was to great disappointment. The bowl of dry chilli pan mee was disappointing in the most important of ways - taste! It was almost bland and the noodles were a little hard.
I am not sure whether it was the lack of chilli (too little) that made it disappointing or that the noodle was really sub-standard. Maybe it has to do with the staffs who have not quite mastered the way of the chilli pan mee.
Each bowl of dry chilli pan mee is accompanied by a bowl of soup with a generous portion of sweet potato leaf. The soup tasted off and the vegetable seemed that it had either been soaked for too long, not fresh or just not prepared properly.
The chilli pan mee costs RM5.50, while the iced Chinese tea costs RM0.80, bringing the total to RM6.30. I can’t help but wonder if the branch in KL has maintained the “fiery” satisfaction that comes with each bowl of dry chilli pan mee. Apart from chilli pan mee, they have other dishes such as curry pan mee and wan tan soup, amongst others. If you have never tried chilli pan me, maybe it’s best to go to their KL branch.
